Oddly, 1.09 seems to work for me just fine. The game is perfectly stable--no CTDs, no graphics glitches save flickering snowy pine trees (?!?). However, the issue with "vanishing mouseovers" is still exceptionally bad.
I did have problems with antialiasing enabled, but by turning it off in the game and turning it to "software controlled" in the nVidia dashboard, all problems went away. The thing is faster, too.
Regarding the ever-annoying "mousover information no longer coming up"--it's intermittent now. Before, it used to be constant, once it stopped showing, it always stopped showing. But now it sometimes comes back a few turns later. Very strange.
I downloaded 1.09 without problems and was truly hoping that this would be my savior.
However my computer still either freezes solid, or completely shuts down mid-play. These problems happens without warning and at different times. The frustrating part is that the game runs smoothly until the problems occur.

I know I am skimming the minimum requirements but it should still work if it says those are the minimums
I'm sorry, but although civ 4 does indeed run on my system, and I enjoy the gameplay, it is a mind boggler.
I have the recommended (over) system specs and the game runs so sluggishly in some parts:
zooming to globe can be stifling, (when it doesn't crash). Just panning the game map can make one ponder the universe. Pauses in movies and stuttering screens are ridiculous. The 20 second delay in just bringing up the tile grid??
These are all things that are made odder by the fact that so many other games that are far superior graphically can run superbly...Earth 2160, doom3 etc..far superior lighting effects..Earth 2160 is the best RTS i've seen..
How those devs managed to make it work and firaxis can't is a mind boggler.
I can play the game fine most of the time, but having to always wait for the sput...sput...sput...sputter of panning or zooming out (while hoping for no crashes) is so inferior....and grating.
I am so mad because I think that such a great game is being made tedious and ponderous needlessly.
While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.
John, in the .ini file within the games main directory, you can tell it to "ask" you if you want to run window mode or full screen when you launch the game.

or instread of typing "1" or "0," you can type in "ask" (without the paretheses) and the game will ask you each time you launch.

Since patch 1.09 you also have a checkbox within the options named "Full Screen mode" uncheck it and you also have windowed mode upon the next start of civ.
Tamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve." Tamsin (Lost Girl): "He has fallen in battle and I must take him to the Einherjar in Valhalla"
After patching, I now notice that some combat animations are no longer displayed. The result is displayed after a delay corresponding to the usual length of the fight. That never occured before the patch...Small gripe, but I like to see the units slug it out.
I have not experienced that Pacolobo...but then again, I do have a lot of RAM that the game can drink up.

SInce 1.09, The gameplay screen looks fine.....but, Montezuma is invisible, well not totally, his feathers are still there but the rest of him is gone. The really weird thing is that he will be visible in one conversation and invisible the next time. The feathers are always there.
Also, the holy objects in the short "You've discovered.." religion movies are sometimes invisible as well (leaving just the shadow underneath), but also not every time.
What gives?
Bring back 2-D, enough of this polygon crap.
.......shhhhhh......I'm lurking.......proud to have been stuck at settler for six years.......
AoA:
as for the "polygon crap": it does look nicer now, but the game itself has slowed down like mad with the inefficient scrolling (remove mouse from the side and it still scrolls 1-2 tiles further). in the name of "smoothness", other factors like performance have been castrated.
regarding monty: i had these problems with 1.00 and a notebook without T&L. elisabeth could only be seen as a pair of eyeballs and some ear rings - pretty scary
now with 1.09 it works very well except for a few small glitches (like only shadows of cows visible)
