  • Further Update

Just to be sure (I did this last night, but I did it again tonight) I re-ran the separate Direct X install from the CD.

These files (At least these, possibly others) WERE updated, so I seem to be running the 'Special' directX version that is only available on the disks or through the MSFT SDK.

    • Minor (probable) bug.

I asked someone to declare war on someone else, which gave me a green +1 relationship bonus with Alexander (the teammate). I later made peace with the enemy, but Alexander still shows a +1 relationship bonus for this (for the same exact reason), while *neither* of us are at war with the japanese any more . "Our mutual military struggle brings us closer together." is the exact message.

This is also consistent for Caesar (Romans), who I also asked into the same war, and Caesar is still at war with Japan.

That image you posted is the same sort of graphical corruption I was getting (as someone mentioned, some of that seems to be tied to alt tabbing). GF6800 here.

More annoying currently is the skipping audio on the in-game videos

        • Minimap expands!!!!

That's great then. Thanks for the minimap explanation. I hadn't realize it.

I also found why I was getting the flicker. When I complete a unit/improvement I used to put a new item in the production queue immediately. If I wait one turn, it asks me what to produce next and I don't get the flicker in between two turns.

About the slow initialization, when I turned off background stuff, like Spysweeper, it improved a lot.

          • Having seemingly random crash problems.
            AMD Athlon XP 2400+
            1GB RAM
            GeForce4-Ti4400

Dual 1280x1024 monitor setup. Seems to work for a while until graphical corruption followed by total failure.

Still, better than the 3 turns max I got before upgrading graphics drivers

I know that this really isn't any help (I'm a software dev for my sins) so I'll look out for something useful to report for my next crash...

            EDIT:
Seems that the crashes now seem to give graphical glitches trying to restart CIV IV. Have to reboot to do it now. PITA.

            • Nvidia Crash -Update

              Alright -
What I did since last post: Turned off the onboardsoundcard (Soundmax Intel Chipset) after I saw someone else post problems with it. Then I installed a Soundblaster Live, I had laying around.
No joy. All problems still repeated.
              ----------------
Audio Adapter Creative SB Live! Value (CT4780) Sound Card
              ----------------
To recap, in 5 days I have upgraded my Video card (Before CIV release, and since I have replaced my powersupply, and Soundcard. I have additionally removed the second monitor from the windows setup and physically disconnected it.
              ----------------

I'm all out of options on the hardware troubleshooting end.

If anyone needs more info related to the documented problems I've had, feel free to contact me through PM or email. I have nothing more to add at this time other than popping back in every 6 hours and reporting 'crashed again x times'

              ---------------------------
              Thanks

Again for the curious, my system specs are all at the Recomended level (not minimum) or Higher

                is that 6200 GE?

                • Its a "'GE'force" card if that's what you mean....

It's a PNY Videocard, Manufactured by PNY, sold at CompUSA. Full Partnumber shown below... you can follow the link for further details. (I said 4x AGP above, because it's installed into a 4X slot - not that there should be a performance difference on this game between 4x and 8x AGP)

                  • I don't know if this has already been said, but there is a possible glitch when negotiating a peace treaty.

If you add some rather unreasonable terms to the board, including GPT, advances, cities etc., and then ask what do you need for peace, the items that you offered will remain on the board and the leader will ask you if you want to accept. (See Screenshot below)

This is on noble difficulty, and I do have a tech and score lead, but I am no where near capable of launching any kind of attack on the aztecs. I also traded for two major cities.

                    Edit: corrected screenshot.

                      • Heres another example, same game, I declared war on Isabella to see
if the glitch was repeatable. After 10 or so turns waiting for her to talk,
I followed the same procedure listed above:

The AI isn't making its own offers when asked too, rather it uses what the player puts on the table and offers it instead, even if completely outlandish.

                        • Another suggestion: When deciding what tech to choose next, why is the world not scrollable? I don't care if I can click things, but I'd like to scroll around to see if e.g. farming is a better idea than minig.

                          • I have found a diplomacy modifiers bug:

Not the signed Open Borders treaty and then the mods: positive for open borders and then negative for open borders

Performance issues: Im trying to run civ on laptop (passes all minimal requirements according to srtest no problem) but even with lowest settings and lowest resolution rendering is very slow. Laptop Toshiba SM30-852, Pentum M 1.5 GHz, 1GB ram, nVidia 6200 Go (iirc). Most of the 3d games work ok on it on lowest settings, but civ4 is barely playable.

Also, having animations frozen option chosen in menu, still does not prevent diplomacy animations to play, making it even less playable.

                            • Military F5 screen - long time load

The military screen takes like 5 minutes to load.
I have close to minimal requirements, but when compared to 5 seconds load time for other screens this looks like a bug in algorithm

                              • Graphical bug/glitch

I have it that with the yield overlay in both the cityscreen and the main game map only the food shows.

Beside of that, the game seems to run rather smoothly on my Nvidia GeForce4 420 GO 32 VRAM, save for the expected stutter with the intro movie and some slow loading/switching between info screens.
