  • O.K. Here are my picks:

    1 Hex
    2 Korn and
    3 Adm.Naismith

I believe they will be fair. Remember that there are two issues at hand: Whether or not mindless city expansion (my version of ICS) still is the only way to win in a competitive game and whether or not combat is as dull as ever. I realize that there is room for subjective judgement here, but I will abide by the ruling of this committee.

Also, should the need arise, I have complete control over how I will eat this cardboard! This is non-negotiable.

For what it's worth, I've got some recipes ready...

As to my picks...Hmmm....now accepting bribes?

Seriously, if the selection spans the whole of Apolyton, then mayhaps something like:

            Aeson
            Theseus
            Alva

To me it's most important that you'll be proven wrong

Oh, thanks for your choice of my humble soul!

Just a question for MarkG: I'd like to know if my judgment must be based only on Yin/Vel reviews or I must play the game myself (may be the game will be available later here in Italy - and no, I'm not begging to have it sent to me earlier by someone, I want to honestly buy it here at a game shop in Milano).

                          Thank you

A second question: The expiration date of the contest will be after how many days, since game will be available to Yin & Vel?

I'm judging the content Yin's review and then making a judgement call on whether he goes on a cardboard diet, right????

(do we also decide how much to eat - and Vel looks like he could use some cardboard too)

Sidenote: Same with me, I probably will not have the game until Christmas, and I do not expect another free game from Apolyton. (I won the civ TOT game here)

                            • I don't think I'd be considered an impartial judge. I don't think the ICS "problem" as yin defines it, "Whether or not mindless city expansion (my version of ICS) still is the only way to win in a competitive game", even existed in Civ III. Mindlessly placing cities beating an equally skilled opponent (either head to head, or comparison vs AI) who is thoughtfully placing cities? No way in hell.

Even other more more conventional definitions of ICS, like placing cities as close together as allowed, didn't result in an unbeatable strategy. It could be part of an overall very strong playstyle when done right, in the right situations, but other playstyles could still compete with it, and in a lot of situations were superior. Especially later on when RCP (before it was taken out in C3C) and the FP placement were better understood. At that point, ICS was very rarely a good choice anyways.

The "best" way to place cities in Civ III was situational. Even RPC wasn't always the right answer, though it was closer than any other acronym'ed placement. What's the land like, who/what are the opponents, what's the goal. It hopefully will still be the same in CIV. If ICS (more conventional definitions, settling cities close together) is taken out completely as a viable option, rather than just being an option that is well balanced with other city placement, I think that's a loss to the game. Balanced options are good. Eliminated options are bad.

hmmm i guess you must have some experience with civ4 otherwise you wont be able to judge yin's findings.

i think two weeks of playtime for yin & vel is decent amount of time to make a judgement. add to that a week to write the review
                                yin, vel, sounds ok?

if a judge doesnt have the game in this timeframe backup choices should be made
