Thinking of mods, I kind of wish for a mod that would let you navigate through DC on surface. I think the ruined DC looks great but I don't like it how it's essentially broken down into numerous small areas and you have to use the metro to get around. I'd rather see foot travel also viable between all DC locations. My first trip to Rivet City took me quite a while to get through the DC areas.

I think the Metro tunnel decision may have been a memory constraints issue. The ruins of DC may be pretty resource intensive from a computing viewpoint.
Or they just wanted DC to be a really "dungeon" type environment.
But I agree with you - on my second playthrough, the tunnels were the least enjoyable part of the game, especially went I was trying to find a location I'd been to once before but had to go over every square inch of map to revisit in this runthrough.
Some post-apocalypse books I've read also postulate that subway tunnels will very quickly fill with water, and collapse, if left unmaintained. So there is that minor verisimilitude quibble."lol internet" ~ AAHZ

They can just keep loading the area as you walk through it, Oblivion did it, I assume Fallout also does, just that it's hidden. Heck, when you're in the Wasteland, they don't have all of it in memory, they load as needed. I don't like fast travel and don't use it in the Wasteland, but do occasionally use it to DC to get between areas I've visited, it's hard enough to not emerge in the wrong place with those tunnels.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

All of the recent Bethesda titles use a grid system, where the world at large is broken down into squares. The square you're occupying and the 8 surrounding squares are active while the rest are dormant. When you move it loads the new squares and activates them while deactivating the ones that are now out of the radius. Morrowind did this, so did Oblivion, and I expect Fallout 3 does the same way. That's why you don't generally see a loading screen while roaming.Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Yeah, that's something like what I guessed. I remember Oblivion would sometimes show "loading" at the bottom of the screen, though it really didn't need to. So DC can also be handled that way I would presume.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

The most fun I had in the game was exploring downtown DC. Since I've done most of that it is starting to get more boring. At least enemies respawn so I have things to kill.Eschewing obfuscation and transcending conformity since 1982. Embrace the flux.

yeah, I very much disliked the tunnels, made it hard to figure out how to get from point a to b. The ranger quest was a ginormus pain in the azh because of this.
The ruins that are there don't match anything I would expect in a nuke blast either. We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

Makes for a better game, though. I'm sure that after a real nuclear strike central areas of the city would take more damage, not less, and that the Capitol and anything else important would be completely gone, but hey, the game is better the way it is.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

The Fallout launcher (comes with the game) has a "Files" section in which you just tick the extra files (mods) you want to run, although some mods have slightly more complex instructions.
Generally, browse the Fallout mod forum at the official forums to see what's going on. Mods tagged with [REL] or [RELz] are released. You can also browse Fallout mods at the Fallout Nexus.
but exactly how do i put a file i want into the proper file on my PC?
What is the pathway for Fallout 3 Mods?

There's no "mod folder", the Data folder is where those .esp files from mods normally go. But, if you download a mod, always read its installation instructions, in an included readme file or the page where you download the mod. There are a few mods where installation requires something else. And don't forget to check the mod in the launcher!Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

The new NVIDIA patch v. 181.20 is completely incompatible with Fo3 it appears.
I am having random desktop crashes all over the place. This game is getting shelved till BethSoft decides to patch it before the next DLC.The Wizard of AAHZ
