I was not tainted by other two in series so was my first go at it and LOVE it

I just need to get the mechanics of what is best to do and this is a MUDDER of a huge world to explore

    Spoiler:
I about P!$$ed my pants when near the supermarket you go to fetch some meds for a lady at Megaton, there is a tower, like that for high voltage lines, and this huge fly was attacking me and then when I went into another area and three fire ants fried me as well as those monsters by the river near some junk cars, three, out of nowhere...lol..my wife laughed like heck at me when I was bobbin 'N weavin, she told me it looked like I was back in a kickboxing match in ring fighting them, head down and guard up, lol, but it was soooo intense

It sure is, it's a very addictive game. Even though I've spent many hours on the game I see new things every day

      • I would say yes, it is worth the $50 if your system can handle it.

I had to turn down the AA and AF settings my machine was a bit laggy in heavy enemy areas (even though they were not on the screen).

And for some reason my butler in Megaton was hosing it up to.

I have a new creature to fear. Score is it 4 me 0.

I don't remember the name of it, but it looks like a werewolf.

About three whacks from this thing and I'm dust. Problem is, he always gets me when I'm fighting someone else, I don't notice him in time to kill him (before he kills me).

I finally got the combat shotgun, that is nice for short range pain giving.

I also have the sniper rifle, but there us never enough ammo for that.

What is the dealio with the armory in Megaton? That thing is nevah open. ???
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

        • Sounds like a Yao Guai (or something like that). Basically a pissed off bear.

          Stephen Colbert was right!

And yes, the armory is never open--it's not a business, it's a storehouse. So you've either gotta pick the lock or pinch the key from the person who has it... wonder who that would be...

I mean, I saw it coming, but still... goddammit! What does Bethesda have against their top-tier voice talent?

            • HELL YES!

The editor is great news. So we're probably looking, just like Oblivion, at hundreds of mods, balance tweaks, new items, new quests... wheeeee! I'll probably be starting another game with another character after some interesting mod stuff is out.

              • With combat focused content I could play this much longer than Oblivion. The only combat I found remotely satisfying in Oblivion was bows, but this is much more fun.

                • Finally finished it - guess i ought to start doing work again.

Without trying to give too much away the ending is pretty poor and probably the weakest part of the game. In fact having spent many hours getting there I'm pretty annoyed.

Quite a few mods are starting to appear though. I think the one I'd like to see first is a repair one. It needs to be something like Morrowind where you use hammers and repair skill to fix things rather the current skill where I find myself stockpiling weapons just so I can repair them. It also makes a high strength essential just to carry around spare sniper rifles etc.

                  • The ending actually works just fine if you have no allies with you. It's the sort of bittersweet "zero net gain" type of ending that you see in Fallout 1.

I've heard that if you have any allies with you at the end, it develops several huge plot holes, with two allies in particular being very problematic.

You may want to drop off your allies. Or Bethesda should have made them die in the Liberty march to the endgame area.

                    • What plot holes? I had Fawkes, but maybe I missed it.
                      John Brown did nothing wrong.

                      • Plot holes from your followers at the endgame. (MAJOR SPOILERS)

                        Spoiler:
If you're alone, as I was, then there really is no choice but to do what you gotta do and die heroically. But if Fawkes or Charon are with you, the game didn't seem to know how to deal with the fact that they are immune to radiation. Bethesda just wrote in a few badly-rationalized reasons why they couldn't go in there for you and do it and you all could live.

Long story short, I would recommend killing off or releasing all NPCs from service just before you get to the end. During the Liberty March is a good time.

                        • I saw this on offer for the 360 last night and got it. I'm having a long break over Christmas and this will be one of the games I play.

                          • Well that plot hole was the first thing that made me feel it was all a bit staged.

My main issue was that I just no longer identified with the main quest by that point. It probably didn't help that I managed to do somethings out of sequence so I'd found the father before Rivet City and ended up at the Citadel following the tunnel set piece. The Brotherhood were just another faction in the wasteland whom I don't particularly care about. The only conversations and quest I did for them was the one that leads to the Liberty March.

I guess I was also hoping for an Arcanum/Fallout 2 summary which tells me the consequences of my actions i.e. megaton thrives, the mutants take over, nuke cola production restarts etc

How do I do spoilers? Bit difficult to discuss the ending without giving things away. Can't believe after how many years here i've never needed to do this before
