I know! I don't know why, but that bit between Vanderburg and the very end has always seemed like filler to me, even though it contains that one boss bottle.

Of course, I had played it through relatively recently prior to 2 years ago (probably more like 3-4, now that I think about it), so that may have had something to do with it.

Errr... Deus Ex is rightly praised as one of the best games ever made, but I don't think anyone has ever praised it for clever bot AI...

I agree, everything after Paris feels exactly like filler.

            Run away from
            Spoiler:
Walton Simons? I did that the first time, but I encountered him again at Area 51.

Edit - spoiler tags at Solver's request

Put that in spoiler tags You can also run from him there. Nothing really requires you to kill him.

I prefer killing/ko'ing you-know-who the first time he shows up to fight, and then tossing him 'outside' for bait

/me is sooo envying LotM for being able to play it through the first time right now
But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

The second time I played, I did it as a powerful fighter - maxed my heavy weapons skill and used the rocket launcher. I was surprised at how easily you-know-who is dealt with then One rocket up his exhaust port and he suffers enough damage to try and run...

I never found him a threat... although I never played a fighter character either. It seems the first time I played I managed to miss him?

I got the hankerin' to fire this one up again, but my new computer is not running it well.

The game is patched up to 1.112 i believe.

My system is an amd 5400+, geforce 8800gt 512 MB.

Everything runs very fast. I'm using the direct3d option under the games video choices.

Anyone with this card having any issues?

Maybe I should keep an old system atound to play old games..

Well, never mind. I used the Windows XP compatibilty settings program to have deus ex run under windows 98 mode.

Runs fine now, except the resolution caps at 1280xwhatever.

I had been searching before I posted , then the last search yielded the answer..I didn't even know Windows had this function.

that wasnt THAT hard to find, and once in, (once I figured out that flares are for light in passages) i quickly found the way to the station, and it was VERY easy. Quickly took a couple of guys out from the vent, then when I went in, with the baton, they all ran away. Maybe I should play on a higher level.

BTW, Im playing in XP, but with a low spec system.

Oh...I was meaning that for most FPS bot AI is one of the holy grails, one of the aspects that reviewers often mention. In Deus Ex I found it had little impact on the overall gameplay satisfaction. So does this mean it is or isn't really an FPS(in the traditional sense)?

I'm not a fan in general of the FPS genre(too many years playing space invaders and robotron2084 etc(twitch gaming)), I half blame the genre for the current blanket philosophy of Graphics over Gameplay in modern game design(especially current console game design).

Still I have played some great FPS games(so they do exist to me in my gaming experience) and Dues Ex is right at the top of that list, even without clever bot AI. So does a great FPS need good bot AI, even if it isn't MP? Dues Ex would suggest not, so what is good about Dues Ex as an FPS to allow it to avoid this typical FPS requirement?

For me Dues Ex is all about the setting and the story(and the attention to detail and obvious 'love' that it's creators had for it) - the fact that it's told through the medium of an FPS is neither here nor there for me. I could have found it as equally compelling as a point+click adventure(like Monkey Island etc).

Oh the sniper rifle in the 'ship dockyard' level(with the big bots and lots of guards) is quite handy, as are setting proximity grenades on crates to get rid of patrolling bots. Is that a spoiler? if so sorry! Or you can just sneak around them

Do the hotel first. Next keep your head down until the shootout round the corner is almost over and search all the bodies. Then do the bar. You really need to see Smuggler and you pick up the quest to get to him in the bar. He is the only way to do the sewer quest.

The Free Clinic is useful, but expensive, if you have a biomod to install and to use the medbots to heal any damage.

Don't bother with shotguns (useless) but do hang onto an assault rifle.

Hint: talk to the NPC's repeatedly until they run out of answers.
Never give an AI an even break.
