The pros at Beyond3D are investigating the graphics in detail...

so far this is what it looks like:

    PS3= 630P@2xAA (quincunx)
    360=720P@2xAA

Man, there is a ****storm on a lot of gaming forums.

People don't like the PS3's resolution being lower...

I don't see why they would care, the consensus is the ps3 version looks slightly better. Halo 3 ran at 640 and it looked awesome.

The review copies apparently differ from retail. On NeoGAF, someone with a REVIEW copy posted an animated gif showing popup on the 360 (tree popping up and car running into it).

Then someone with a RETAIL copy posted the exact same scenario with no popup atall.

I think there's less difference overall than what was indicated in the reviews, at least w.r.t. popup.

The reason a lot of reviewers (but not all) preferred the PS3's look is likely cause of the slight blurring effect from Quincunx AA + scaling. This is more of a preference than anything else, I prefer a sharper image...

I have seen the gifs, they really don't prove anything. Pop ins aren't really predictable. I agree that the 360 version does seem to have a sharper image, almost all ps3 games seem blurry compared to 360 games.

FWIW I'll be getting the 360 version.

I'm a little annoyed by all the perfect scores. The game looks like a prettier verison of GTA 3 with multiplayer..And I find it pathetic that reviewers are so thrilled that you can do exotic things like take cab rides, buy clothes, go on "dates", and call the police in the game.

More tech fun. Here's the final results:

                Xbox 360: 1280x720, 2x Anti-Aliasing
PS3: 1152x640, no anti-aliasing, but post-processing filter using Cell which blurs the image slightly and adds "hot tint" which some reviewers preferred

It seems the TV people use matters a lot on the PS3. Some of the comments from PS3 purchasers @ Beyond3D:
the aliasing in the ps3 version is very visible on my LCD tv. The post-processing doesnt hide it at all.

So far im really disappointed with the iq of this game. It's the worst ive seen this gen.
So i went ahead and bought the PS3 version anyway and it has the worst jaggies so far of this generation. Even worse than Halo 3, imo.

Havent seen the 360 version yet.
Some direct framebuffer screenshots from both copies. The links only work if you view them from Beyond3D, so there are the links:

Reading the IGN forums today is also enlightening. I'm wondering what the reviewers were thinking when they gave the PS3 the slight visual edge?

Hi all, I just got home with my copy and man does it look blurry. The settings on my TV are fine, and there's nothing wrong with them. And I have not experienced this with any other game. The game just looks really blurry and not sharp or crisp at all. Is anyone else experiencing this? It happens under both 720p and 1080p settings.

YES. It's bloody awful. It's detail compensation gone horribly wrong. I thought most Xbox 360 games used way too much DoF blurring, but this game just takes it to new levels.

Ya, I don't know. This just really stinks considering it was supposed to be the visually superior version. Perhaps I need to mess with the in-game setting some more.

Am I the only one that thinks the graphics are a god-awful blurry mess?

Yea, graphics are nowhere near as good as some (IGN!) would have you believe

                        What PC version?

I'll pirate the PC version when it comes out too.

                        Suck it down, Frostyboy.

Seriously Frosty, we're all PC gaming fans here, it's just that some of us recognize that PCs aren't as specialized as consoles for certain genres.

While I wouldn't want to play an RTS with a gamepad, GTA feels better with one. Having an analog stick instead of the WASD gives much better control.

And cheating is out of control on PCs, while Xbox Live constantly checks for it, and has the means to punish offenders. All a cheater does on PC is find a different server and away they go.

Demos are a piece of cake on Xbox (can't speak for PS3).

For once Asher is the voice of reason.

so I read the glowing IGN reviews, but I want to know: is the game worth buying, or is it a 3 day rental?

Depends if you like the game or not. If you like it, you'll get your money's worth and then some. I mean, the game is huge and now there's the multiplayer. And all the reviews I've read so far are glowing.

If you don't believe me, check out the reviews on Gameranking:

Not every critic is the same. Metacritic offers aggregated game reviews from the top critics, and our own METASCORE pinpoints at a glance how each game was reviewed.

I know, its a bit suspicious. But only time will tell if its that good.

All the reviews say it is completely perfect. It's called hype.

The game is a prettier version of GTA3. I watched some reviews. Apparently, it gets people off that they can take cab rides, make "friends", go on "dates", etc. If you don't know how cool it is to do those things on an xbox, you're missing out...

OH HONEY PRESS MY A BUTTON. PRESS IT HARD AND DON'T STOP UNTIL IT JAMS

Then there's the 30 year old reviewers who giggle every time they shoot people and think it's awesome they can carjack old people and run them over. You know, like the ones Gamespot brought in after it lost its entire editorial staff for caving to advertiser pressure.
