Following his escape from the clutches of Commodore Norrington, Jack manages to slip past the subsequent chase in the only ship that cannot be caught by any of the Royal Navy, the Black Pearl. Knowing that Commodore Norrington is still searching for him, he seeks a safe harbour by which he can rest and relax for awhile.

He comes upon the idea of sailing to a small uncharted desert isle called Mingapulco Island, and beaching the Black Pearl so that it could be obscured by the thick tropical flora and allow Norrington to lose the trail entirely and go home empty handed once again.

However, as he sails to Mingapulco Island, a large storm erupts and buffets the ship. Normally the Black Pearl could sail straight through the storm, but the intensity is nearly that of a hurricane, causing Jack to seek the nearest port. Unsure of his exact location, Jack runs aground causing significant damage to the Black Pearl, but managing to salvage both his crew and the hold.

For a twist of fate, he and his crew are stuck aboard the Island with their ship, but unable to sail away until the repairs can be made.

Meanwhile, in the Flying Dutchman, Davy Jones who is always searching for new crewman to man his enchanted cutter, easily sails through the storm provoked by his consort, the sea goddess Calypso. They to come across Mingapulco Island, and land on shore seeking out the crew of the Black Pearl. When they meet a furious battle erupts, ending in a hostile truce by which Jack agrees to leave the crew of Davy Jones alone, in exchange for their safety while they repair the Black Pearl.

Finally, at the end of the storm, Norrington, in the Dauntless also pushes through to Mingapulco Island still seeking the Black Pearl. Seeing the Flying Dutchman, he too makes parley with both while Jack fixes his boat, not wishing to provoke a battle with the Flying Dutchman over the custody of Jack and his crew. Oddly enough, that truce would not last long...

Maccus is the first mate of the Flying Dutchman under Davy Jones in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. He has the head of a hammerhead shark, his right eye being normal while the left has migrated to the far end of his head. His teeth are also shark-like, with his lips stained red with blood presumably from biting himself. A set of crustacean-like legs spouts from his back.
