It may well be except that's not really what you asked, Asher. You asked what games I would have gotten besides Zelda.
True, but my motives are to find something to get the SO. And inferior versions of games he has otherwise won't do.

But is it fun? That's the true question right, as Nintendo's Wii console is (essentially) sacrificing the graphical look of its competing consoles for unique control? Well, we'd honestly prefer classic control on this one, as the main concept behind the Wii control works, but the final product still just isn't any more fun to play. The goal was to incorporate five basic gestures into a more free-form fighting system. Players can shake the controller for a melee attack, swipe to do a heavy attack, lift up to perform pop-ups on enemies, smash down with the drop of the controller, or stab forward to do - you guessed it - a stabbing attack. The biggest issue with the control comes from the motion detection, as there's a specific right way and wrong way to pull off the move, and if you deviate from the pre-set motions you'll misfire into another attack. After a few hours with the game we could get about 85% accuracy with our motions, though there were exceptions having the lift attack translate into the slam (both vertical motions), or having a sweep actually stab. These little issues - while uncommon - definitely break up the otherwise acceptable gameplay.
Also, it looks like a Gamecube game. :/

Then perhaps you should mention the kinds of games he likes and games he already has if you want shopping advice for your boyfriend. It'd save time.

Wow, Wii Boxing and Tennis can get really competitive - no one who has played Wii Sports can call the Wii a gimmick. Even Bowling is fun, although no where near as frantic.
Zelda benefits greatly from the Wii controls, and it'll only get better. I can only imagine what an actual Wii-Zelda would be like (instead of a GC port). Worth the 8 hour wait? Most definitely.
This is a lot more fun than any other game/console I've played. The multiplayer just cannot be matched by the Xbox or Playstation, even with the dreadful online functionality right now.
Minor gripes: the controls don't seem to respond as precisely as I'd like, but I think there are a lot of tricks I haven't mastered yet. Other than that, not a lot to complain about. Wii Sports and Zelda look pretty sharp (although Zelda is most definitely a GC port) even with composite cables; the Wii is most definitely not in the league of the 360/PS3, but you just don't care once you actually get into the game.
Whether something is a gimmick or not is determined overtime, not after you wait 8 hours to play it for a bit after you buy it.

I got mine as well. Wish me luck on my 8 hour shift in a few minutes.
Congrats.

You deserve it for managing to get one
If you'd like, I could take some photos of me playing Zelda, to help you along.

On an unrelated note, the Wiimote I bought from Target didn't work properly when I set it up. The cursor would move, but it failed to control the character in the game - tennis racket didn't swing, for example. This seems to be a problem a lot of people are facing, although a lot of them admit it happened after they hit something with the Wiimote. I don't know, I guess it got damaged somewhere along the way to Target, or possibly Nintendo just produced some defective accelerometers or whatever in the Wiimote. Either way, just a heads up.

And some of the remarks in the article are funny - people throwing the remote at the tv while bowling!

Are there any guesstimates as to when Wii will be easily available in the US (ie, without standing in line)? I'm starting to consider getting one but am not at the level of "ooh it's a line let's stand in it" yet

They are getting in shipments weekly, it seems, but the demand is still pretty high. I would say that to completely avoid line-standing, it might not be until after the holidays. Of course, that also depends where you are, I guess.
Over the weekend I plan on buying Trauma Center or Rayman.
I'd like to get Trauma Center used at GameStop, so I can return it for a full refund after I beat it (It is a short game, and I don't foresee a lot of replay value). I am almost certain there won't be any used copies, which makes me lean toward Rayman - lots of replayibility, since it is really just a bunch of "party" minigames - a nice counterbalance to Zelda, and an alternative to WiiSports.
