I think if we want to compare game ratings to illustrate our points on the merits of consoles, it would make more sense to use a source that compiles data from multiple sites, like Metacritic, as opposed to a single review site like Gamespot. That would give us a broader view of the games.

For example, Gamespot rated Zelda for Wii an 8.8, whereas the average from all the other review sites (listed on metacritic) is 9.6.

If we use this comparison, then the Wii has 9/12 (75%) games with the score of 7.5 or above (which is what Metacritic considers "good"), the PS3 has 9/14 (64%) and the 360 - 62/123 (50%).

Now, to me, these statistics are still a bit unsatisfiable, simply because personally I think 360 and Wii are both far better than the PS3, and hence I would subjectively like for the numbers to show this, but nonetheless, I think that these numbers are better than just looking at Gamespot, or any one review site.

    • I agree. Wiggy brought it up, I used his source.

I'm not sure why the percentages matter at all for how many games are 7.5 or above. The only thing that matters is the first number.

That's why the PS2 won last gen, and why the 360 will win this gen.

Earlier launch --> more games --> good games get cheap as other console's good games come out.

Asher PS2 has about 40 titles above 9.0. Xbox 360 has 5. Let us realize that Xbox360 has been out FOR A YEAR. That is 1/4 the life span of PS2 so through extrapolation, we will see about 20 xbox 360 titles above 9.0, a "far cry" from past generations, and an abject failure for Microsoft.

Also Metacritic randomly assigns numbers to reviews, they are not to be trusted, although I regularly use the site.

        • Asher : Xbox is about as appealing as ass this holiday season. There are 2-3 Must-have titles. A year into release? God damn I am winning this argument.

This is stupid. You can't compare games released over the PS2s entire life, vs. early 360 titles, and "extrapolate". It takes developers a year before they even tailor games towards the console, rather than come out with some halfassed port...(with a few exceptions). Just look at the huge improvement in graphics achieved in games like Halo 2 or Ninja Gaiden, versus earlier titles like the original Halo, etc.

Then compare that to the most recent PS2 titles, which still look as ****ty as earlier PS2 launch titles.

              • How anyone can want to buy an xbox 360, whose only good titles are Call of Dutys, Gears of War, Pefect dark Zero, and Ghost Recon and Rainbow 6 Vegas (all involve shooting things and ZOMFG GRAPHIXX AND U NEED 2 TAKE COVER), is beyond me .

What the Cell is Going On:

Blu-ray. The Cell Processor. The RSX graphics chip. The PS3 was supposed to be the most insanely advanced gaming machine ever created. It was supposed to be able to deliver visuals well beyond anything capable on console or PC. According to Sony, the next generation wasn't supposed to begin until PS3 arrived.

So why is it, then, that all these PS3 games look just the same as they do on the Xbox 360?

                  ...

Can't get the images to link properly (show up in [IMG] tags, think they block that) but take a look for yourself. The first comparison, the PS3 looks better color-wise, but the image is not the same, so..

                    • Nothing much. All 3 consoles are a bust right now.

                        • Of course not. My reasoning:

                          1) All of Xbox's best games (all 6 of them) are shooters, except one or two.
                          2) Ps3's are non-existent/same as Xbox360.
                          3) Wii has 1-2 good titles.

Don't see any reason to pay hundreds for same old, same old. Hopefully someone can convince me otherwise (someone who has "touched 'em").

I've been saying this for a long time now. Cell is all hype, all the time. It's got 1 pretty weak CPU with 7 glorified vector processors that can't even touch main RAM without begging the CPU to do it for them. It's a horrid design for game consoles, but it's fine for things such as video encoding/decoding. Then again, Sony wants to use it in those kind of applications as well...that's why it's designed like that.

RSX is a GeForce 7900 GT. Not even a GTX. With less memory bandwidth than a 7900 GT...

                            • Well, all I know is that last night some friends and I got together, including several people who are usually very critical of video games in general, and before we knew it, we were 4 hours into a Wii Sports-a-thon with people whooping and hollering without a care. The system definitely had the ability to get people to have fun, and that by itself is a major selling point. We can argue about game ratings all day, but in the end, aren't they all more or less meaningless when you finally sit down to play something and make your own judgement?
