Guitar Hero's controller is shaped the way it is to fool people into thinking they are playing a guitar. If the controller was not shaped like a guitar, no one would play the stupid game.
Unlike FPS games, which are not as dependent on the look of the controller.

Now I see why you hate the Wii so much.
Obviously, Wii Sports is just trying to fool people into thinking they are playing real sports. Red Steel is trying to fool people into thinking they are really shooting or swinging a sword. Zelda is trying to fool people into thinking they are really fishing, swinging a sword, etc.
I think your argument is stupid. By the same token, realistic graphics and sound are bad because they try to fool you into thinking "you are really there".
Which comes back to your point on FPSs. Alright. Let's take a good FPS (as defined by popular opinion). Say Counterstrike. Let's remove all textures. Let's replace the gun in your hand with a gray rectangle. Let's replace enemies by bland meshes the shape of the original bounding box. Let's replace sound by 8-bit era beeps. I would wager nobody would play it then, even though the underlying game mechanic is exactly the same.
OK. Does this imply Counterstrike is somehow inferior because it relies so much on the graphics? The above is the exact same argument that you made about guitar hero and controllers.
Pressing buttons and hitting a strum bar when the screen tells you to.
That is the extent of its gameplay. The songs, the graphics on screen, and the all-important controller just hide that.
With a game like Zelda, or Company of Heroes, or hell, even WoW, the game does present some illusions. But it moves beyond that. There is discovery, strategy and socializing in those games respectively. That is why those games are good.
Guitar Hero, on the other hand, is absolutely nothing without the controller. It's the eqivalent of a football videogame that gives your team a good pass play when you press the "A" button really fast on cue. Has nothing to do with anything, but with the right graphics, you'd apparently buy into it.

Well, you obviously haven't ever played the game or don't understand the appeal of twitch games, so the argument is pointless.

From what I hear, Guitar hero is pretty social. Like people play it with RL friends, not with members of some "guild".
I tried it at the store. Didnt blow me away, but I could see its appeal.

Regarding Madden on all 3 consoles -- apparently each console score is relative to the other games on the CONSOLE, and as such 360/PS3 scores cannot compare directly to Wii scores.
In IGN's extensive head to head, they conclude with:
Not being able to display 1080i is a big negative for the PS3 version of Madden 2007. It wouldn't be too bad though if it looked sharper or ran smoother at 720p than the 360 version but it doesn't. The Wii motion control adds a really cool twist to the traditional Madden experience, but doesn't make the gameplay any more fun than it was before, and is ultimately just an alternative style. The 360 title is the second Madden game developed for the system and it shows. It runs a bit smoother than the PS3 version and has a sharper display due to the PS3's high contrast. The PS3 title could've had a big advantage over the 360 with the features of the Sixaxis, but it's obvious that not enough time was spent on the implementation of the tilt functionality so relying on it to execute certain moves in Madden becomes a liability. The three bonus mini-games exclusive to the Wii version are great additions and almost make up for it's lack of online support, but the majority of the Madden faithful play online, so that's a major benefit to picking up a PS3 or 360 copy. Also, the Dolby Digital Surround sound really enhances the intensity of the on-field action and adds a level of immersion to the 360 and PS3 versions that the Wii does not provide.
Our final recommendation is to pick up a 360 copy over the PS3 or Wii releases. If you want to choose between the Wii version and one of the previous generation titles, we still recommend the Xbox version, but the Wii wins out over the PS2 and GameCube.
Winners
1) Xbox 360
2) PlayStation 3
3) Wii
So not only are both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions better, the Xbox1 version is better than the Wii version.
On the control scheme in particular:
Now on to the Wiimote: it's undeniably a really fun and unique way to play Madden. EA did an incredible job translating the increasingly complicated Madden control scheme to the Wiimote and nunchuck. Everything from snapping the ball to throwing, kicking, swatting the ball away, and hitting is done with Wii motion control, and pulling off simple maneuvers like juking, are done simply by gesturing the nunchuk left, right, or back. Simply put: it works perfectly.
But is it any better than using a traditional controller? In a word; no. Different; yes. Fun; yes. Does it change the gameplay enough to recommending it over the PS3 or Xbox 360 titles? No. It doesn't create a new strategy or require a new way of thinking about each game to be successful. It's a great alternative, but doesn't make executing anything on the field any simpler. You could say it's a "revolutionary way to play" videogame football, but while a revolution always signals change, things aren't always better as a result.
Wow. That sounds familiar.

Ran across this while looking for news of the MS press conference today.
Makes sense to me.
