I asked because I saw one around Leyawiin, just outside the city gates actually, and the sky was getting all red and creepy and impending-doomish. Glad to know I can tackle it at my leisure.

Has anyone else seen the town guards kill a townsperson out of the blue? I was wandering around Bravil when I see one of the NPCs come running past, chased by a guard who is swinging at her. I followed them around town, and she finally ran into the chapel at which point he guard cornered her and killed her. That was that. Didn't seem to be part of any scripted event or quest, so was this just the radiant AI at work?

Could be, or could be something else. Some of the townspeople are actually members of the Mythic Dawn cult. Every so often as the game goes on, one of them summons the armor and goes on a rampage. It could easily have started with that, bringing in townspeople and guards vs the cultists, and one of the townspeople accidentally hit a guard a few too many times.Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

NPCs will also pickpocket other NPCs or steal items. Guards will come after them if they do, it doesn't happen often and I've never seen them kill. So it is probably as Quillan suggested. Although usuallly the cultists fight to the death before they get a chance to flee.

Best looking character ever there.
"Oblivion features rats in high-resolution HDR anisotropic pixel lighting and sewers with bump mapping z-buffer effects. Never before has killing rats in a sewer level looked so good. The unoriginality literally jumps out at you! "

1) The game is becoming more and more unstable especially when changing zones - I got three crashes to desktop today while entering buildings or fast travelling. I never had stability problems before.
2) Barrels and crates in cities and dungeons are recharged after exactly 1 month game time. I learned that the hard way - I had 3 crates in the market district (1 for storation, 1 for stolen goods to be sold and 1 trashbin), and all three lost their content. In a 4th crate in a dungeon near Kvatch I had stored some loot (which had gotten too heavy) and its comtent disappeared at the same time. When I looked at the date, it was exactly 1 month after the game started.

hieronymous lex is immortal. i have tried killing him, but all that happens when his health gets to zero is that he goes unconcious. a couple seconds later he springs back up with full health. its funny. when he's face down sprawled out on the ground unconcious, the talk button still comes up when you approach him. press it and he'll give you the 'stop right there' speech even though he is face down in the dirt and supposedly unconscious.

There's a mod out there that removes that effect, too. Then again, this effect is probably a necessary evil given how Oblivion NPCs are actually active. In Morrowind, the NPCs would only die if you killed them. In Oblivion, they could die for some other reasons, and it would have been annoying to get any quest screwed up because of that.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

There have been reports on the official forums how guards chased and killed NPC citizens wandering in the wilderness, for unknown reasons. There were even gripes on how NPCs disappeared this way, which would be necessary for quest updates (one player told how he searched one for long, only to find his corpse later).

I had a similar situation to that one last night. I was doing the Mage guild quest for the recommendation from the chapter head at Anvil. I'd spent the night at the inn, pretending to be a merchant. Now, the next morning I was heading down the road, secretly followed by two imperial battlemages, trying to draw out the rogue mage in question. Suddenly, I see a fight up ahead. An Oblivion gate had opened, and one of the mounted patrolling guards was being attacked by two scamps. His horse was already dead. Before I could even get close, both battlemages and the rogue mage I was after charged into the battle! Screwed the quest all up, and I had to reload an earlier save and do it over.Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

I reccomend getting this face MOD.
Natural Faces Plugin for Oblivion
Version 0.7
"Adds a higher resolution base texture for the following races:
Breton, Dark Elf, High Elf, Imperial, Nord, Orc, Redguard and Wood Elf
Improves the Normal maps for the youngest age group on males and all age groups on females for the following races:
Breton, Dark Elf, High Elf, Imperial, Nord, Redguard and Wood Elf"
Example of a face without the mod then one with it:

i really wish microsoft would get off their butts and make morrowind 360-compatible... i never finished the game because of constant memory crashes..
