  • Here's a wacky suggestion to discourage "cheating":

The successful guesser must disclose his new word to the last word setter, who cannot play the next round but acts as an umpire for that round
So if you meet me have some courtesy, have some sympathy and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse, or I'll lay your soul to waste

    • That's a variation of my solution, so I support it. It won't solve the issue of joncha's supremacy though.

      • man it can be hard enough getting 5 people together for a good round - now you would need 6 to get a session of speed hangman...

        • Then, how about my original idea? Thread GMs. If people are reluctant to step in, I'll be the first thread GM, I don't mind. After all no setter points will be recorded, so the words will be more interesting than these mostly 5 letter words that prevail right now.

          • No, I see no reason to change how it works now, when it works so well.

            • Hmm... I thought people would jump at the chance to reset the scores.

I have no problem leaving things as is, but I think having a GM is a good idea. It would certainly bring Hangman in line with all the other forum games. I also have no problem with GMing the first thread.

Guesses could still be recorded, but having a new winner each thread would give new players a chance at the fame and glory that comes with being a champion.

If people are concerned about losing the points that they've built up, we can always back-date the system and declare winners for all the previous threads. We could also keep the running point totals for tie-breaking purposes.

              • No, for me at least it has nothing to do with my own score. That one is so small anyhow. And I don't care for the score much anyway. My point is that the game works pretty well now that we've cleaned up the gruff that plagued us earlier, and when something works well, I see no use for altering it.

                • I don't think the game is working well. I think we're losing players and our player base grows thinner every day. I think the scoring system is to blame. Unless we want the game to turn into a private club, we must change something.

Therefore, a change in the scoring system is required to keep the game interesting for new players and the veterans alike.

Also, the biggest source of fuss in this game has always been word setter points. Should they be eliminated, the opportunity to start a dispute will surely be reduced. With the introduction of a thread GM, the possibility of exploiting some of the rules will be all but eliminated.
Does anyone actually play for the scoring? I mean, sure, it's nice, and it gives you satisfaction when you get a point, but is anyone (except joncha?) actually seriously on a mission to get their score up to be the highest?

                    • There were people who used to be in this game for the score and we lost them because of the scoring system. Joncha's supremacy can only be challenged if we implement a new scoring system, or do you dispute that?

                          • It seems I'm fighting an uphill battle as most players who were in this game for the score already left or are on the verge of leaving and all that remain don't mind the score at all. We'll see how many people will remain and if there will even be enough players for legal guesses in accordance with the rules.

Joncha has 115 points and you have 8. He's so high up that you possibly can't even see him any more.

Then the game would become a complete spamfest. I don't think rah would approve.

                              • mate in so so many threads the group has flucuated up and down quite a bit

and many a time people have gone out and head hunted people to join a session of "Speed Hangman" - thus a great way of getting new blood

                                recruitment does the group good

and new blood also inspires old members to come back and have some fun
