I'm still not sure, and I'd like some of the other regulars to comment. Say there are 2 possibilities. If person A posts after 5 seconds, and person B after 6 seconds with the same guess, person B to make a new post under this interpretation of the rules. They have to wait 30 seconds (unless plussies) for this privilege. 29 seconds later someone else (person c!) posts the guess they were going to make and beats them, despite the fact they were 29 seconds slower.

I'd say person B has a right to feel aggrieved. If he had edited he was not doing so to get an advantage - he would just be trying to get his 50/50 chance at the word.

Whatever happens, it should be added to the rules more explicitly.

Hmm... if we did get rid of "word chains" we would be able to side-step the problem.

The conditions for the update are already there. It just needs a rejig of 4-7, which were always a bit padded.

Old:

4. You can only pick one letter for every two consecutive sets of guesses.

5. Guesses cannot be changed after being posted.

6. You can guess the word at any time, subject to the qualification in rule 7, but guessing incorrectly eliminates you from play.

7. If you make a letter guess you may not make a word guess before an update has occured. The converse also applies as a consequence of rule 2.

New:

4. You can only pick one letter for every two consecutive sets of guesses. However, you can make a letter guess and a word guess in subsequent sets of guesses, with an update occurring in between.

5. Guesses cannot be changed after being posted under any circumstances.

I think the original rules are clearer.

Now for another suggestion:

Let's reset the score.

First, let's declare DrSpike an Honourary Champion.
Second, let's declare joncha the Champion


Third, I suggest the following scoring system in the future:

Each thread will be a separate game. The player with most points in one thread will be the winner of that game.

There will be a GM for each game (thread), one of the players who will always set words throughout the game. After the game is over, the winner will become the GM of the next game.

Joncha will be GM of the first game.

The GM will make sure no spamming occurs for the purpose of securing the victory. Should such spamming occur, the GM will have the option to extend the game to a second thread (stoppage time).

No setter points will be recorded.

I like the current points... is good to see Doc about to be passed at last

also my brians trust have invested a lot of time to win the games they have. and they do not think Doc is any sort of champio, nor the other games king.

we have a fun system that a solid core of players enjoy - why change it further? we obviously do not come here for the +1's etc, as there are none now.

as to spamming - well any such is deleted at 500 posts anyway

I know I'm just a junior at the game, but I really don't see what the fuss is all about. Hangman is fun....and if it weren't for Paddy sending me an email one day to come over here, I never would have visited FG. I think that's where it should be!

As for the +1's, anyone who's here for that needs to seriously get a life (even more than us C3C fanatics!). So a note to the mods about +1's - who cares?

No, this is a fun and easy game that is augmented by the humourous banter between the regulars - that's what I enjoy about it

We all have intellects way beyond Hangman....the one thing we have in common may be that we don't have time to do other things, so we join together in this community thread to kick it around a bit

We can go on with our game, but we will continue to lose players if the score and scoring system remain as they are. Joncha has an enormous advantage to any other player and other players have no hope of catching him, particularly in view of joncha's near 24/7 availability at Poly and his background. Therefore, a change in the scoring system is required to keep the game interesting for new players and the veterans alike.

Also, the biggest source of fuss in this game has always been word setter points. Should they be eliminated, the opportunity to start a dispute will surely be reduced. With the introduction of a thread GM, the possibility of exploiting some of the rules will be all but eliminated.
