I've copy/pasted whole tracts of information on colonising in a previous thread. For colonies, you either want big planets or cold planets. If you can get both, great. Provided you ship or spend most of the colonies resources, you only need token defence. I have yet to have a colony attacked just for its overnight production.

Maybe you could send him a PM asking him to keep an eye on this thread and let us know how things are going?

First: he's only at shipyard 5, which leaves him only with cruisers, secondly: he seems to be the type to build defenses, so he'll only come after you if you have stored up big.
If he keeps scanning you, scan back once in a while (take notes on the time he scans, there might be a pattern) and someday we'll smack him. The fleet in orbit is a nice target, my recyclers will love it

I'm not a noob.
Of course I checked the messages. I'm only probing inactives, anyway, so there is a 0% chance of detection. The probes do get back eventually, just a minute or so after their supposed arrival time.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Here is something I haven't seen before. Someone deleted their planet and there are asteroids at that location. Apparently everything that was on the planet is still there - defences still work and resources can be farmed - but it only lasts for 24 hours. You can farm it as much as you want, too. I'll have to explore this one and see if it is useful to me.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

My two fleets on the way to 145:9 just returned without any goods...
The planets have completely vanished: no Asteroids, no nothing.
Just under two hours ago there was still 200k loot on the planet.
145:10 has also disappeared..."post reported"Winston, on the barricades for freedom of speech

I found an interesting page with information on a number of areas. It is located HERE . I haven't read too much yet, but one thing that we did discuss recently was this:
Noob Protection
From OGame Wiki
[edit]Definition
Noob protection is designed to allow players the opportunity to grow without being destroyed early on.
[edit]How is it done?
Noob protection is available for players under 5,000 points. If a player has, for the sake of argument, 3,000 points it means they cannot attack any players who are 5 times larger (15,000 points) or 5 times smaller (600 points). Those who are too small appear in green in the Galaxy View and those who are too large appear in red.
When a player reaches 5,000 points or more, it changes slightly. They still cannot attack a player who is 5 times less their score as long as the other player is under 5,000 points. For example, a player with 23,000 points can attack anyone who is 4,600 or above, but not 4,599 or below.
However, once you are above 5,000 points, anyone above 5,000 points can attack you, even those with 100 times your score. So whilst the 100,000 point player can't attack someone with 5,000 points, they can attack someone with 5,001 points.
Noob protection also extends to Espionage Probes and Interplanetary Missiles.

And this one is for Spaced, as it answers his question about points (and answers my question about Fleet Points and Research Points).
Points
From OGame Wiki
There are 3 types of points:
Scores: There you get points for spending resources. For each 1000 resources spent you get 1 point. If you lose the thing you spent the resources on you lose the points as well!
Fleet number: Well the name says it. For every ship 1 fleet point is given. It doesn't matter what kind of ship it is, Espionage Probes and Death Stars both give 1 point.
Research level: For every research or research upgrade done, 1 research point is given. It doesn't matter what kind of research it is. Because of this, it doesn't say much about the strength of a player."Clearly I'm missing the thread some of where the NFL actually is." - Ben Kenobi on his NFL knowledge

So if you build a probe, you get 1 point for spent resources and 1 for the ship itself? And a battleship gives you 60 points for resources and 1 for the ship itself?
In other news, the Apolyton alliance is ranked 159, up 5 places from last update.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Not quite. There are 3 different "scoring systems".
In your examples:
If you built a probe you would get one point added to your score for spent resources. If you built a battleship you would get 60 points added to your score for resources.
In your total fleet score, you would get 2 added to your total for building a probe (1) and a battleship (1).
If you look in the statistics screen and choose "players" and by "fleet number" you can see how many ships (I think both offensive and defensive added together) the top 1500 players have.
Doing the same thing with the "players" and by "research level" tells me that you are the only player in our alliance in the top 1500 in research, with 77 techs (which incidently ranks you number 847).
you can also list the alliances by "research" and "fleet number" which gives our alliance high rankings in both (either above or near the top 100 in both).
Bottom line is that I don't think that the 3 scoring systems are additive, they are just 3 different ways of ranking the players, with the most important being score (I assume this as it is shown at the bottom of the overview screen).
