Goth chicks scare me.
They have quite a different effect on me.....
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Amazing how a thread can deteriorate so quickly.

Did I save the Thread or kill it?
depends on the caliber. i've seen as many grossly obese 'goth chicks' as i have the cute ones. in fact i'd put a 4:1 ratio on undesireable to desireable.

That's the difference, isn't it? The author doesn't have to run around in the woods slaying wizards to validate the worlds of fantasy created in his or her head.
The point to be made here would be that first, not all LARPers "run around in the woods" generally it's in a contained space. Say, someone's basement. Indeed, in the Mage LARP handbook they specifically discourage running around in a park unless the players have some sort of sign to explain what they're doing.
The second point to be made would be- think of it as a sport, people idolize baseball players and reenact scenarios and games in their heads when they play. Just think of this as a collective delusion of the same sort.
Odd, yes. Disturbing, not necessarily.
Again, that would apply to someone who dressed up as his or her favourite video game character, not someone who just played the games compulsively.
Can't really see the problem with that. People go dressed up as characters to conventions all the time. Re: all the Capt'n Jack Sparrows to be seen at E3. And heck, don't you dress up for halloween? or Costume balls, etc... not that many of those exist any more, but back before television was invented, people participated in those to pass the time. And it certainly took more imagination and social interaction to participate in a costume/masquerade ball with dancing and all sorts of other fun things than it does to watch TV and veg.
Of course, there's something of a creepiness test to it all. If you can't see where the line lies between a healthy imagination and outright creepiness, you're probably somewhere on the wrong side of it.
True enough. The line that shouldn't be crossed is when people can't separate the game from real life. Or, the game becomes their real life- the only thing they do. Just randomly playing once a month or less is similar to a guy heading out to the bar every now and then to blow off some steam. Or a wargamer going to play in the local game shop's back room with a bunch of his friends pretending they're reenacting the battle of Gettysburg, etc.

Then of course there are the folks who dress up as members of the 18th Wisconsin, complete with kepi hats, packs, authentic uniforms down to the underwear, and functional muskets, and actually go and reenact the battle of Gettysburg - WITH the encouragement of the National Park Service.
