so are there games without a GM? Is it viable or possible?

Possibly, but a large part of the tactical portion of forum games comes from not knowing what the other players are up to in any given round. For this, you need a GM.

People keep playing the 'under the radar' strat in mafia too much- it's sickening- I like the idea of accuring votes against themselves if they do that.
Then look at the people who have abstained and accuse them of being mafia.

Same result. No need to change the rules.

The Society Game (see the link in my signature) is looking for at least one more player maybe while waiting for Nuclear War to end (and with 9 players still alive it may be a while yet), and while Society is among the more complex of the rulesets of the current ongoing games, I had a blast playing last time (or was it that I got blasted? one or the other anyway )

/me hoping that MORON or others reading this check out the Society IV signup thread before the game dies a slow painful death

Come up with 24 distinct, non-generic roles (actual cast members), and put them all together in a believable setting where they would actually vote, etc, then come back to me.

Trust me, I stretched it as much as I could to minimize the number of generics.

Plus, the only reason I've been able to write the chapters as long as I do is because I steal so much text from the book (and adapt it).

I got a lot of practice at it last year in school - we had to cut King Lear down to a thirty-minute play with a total of (IIRC) seven different actors

At least people could play multiple roles

The fault lies in the theme, not with the GM.

Not enough good characters in the book.

I'd love to see a DS9 style mafia.

                        Here's who you would have:

                        Quark
                        Nog
                        Rom
                        Leeta
                        Grand Nagus Zek
                        Moogie
                        Brunt
                        Ben Sisko
                        Jake Sisko
                        Kira Nerys
                        Odo
                        Jadzia Dax
                        Julian Bashir
                        Miles O'Brien
                        Keiko O'Brien
                        Worf
                        Chancellor Gowron
                        Ezri Dax
                        Elim Garak
                        Kai Winn
                        Martok
                        Weyoun
                        Vic Fountain
                        Morn

There you go. 24 different roles.

/me has never watched DS9, so recognizes maybe 3 of those names

However, that's beside the point - are all of those on the Federation side, or whatever? Is there a realistic scenario in which all of them would be together an cooperating?

Now, there are only a few that would be tough to place in the bar at the same time.

And Weyoun can just 'show up' on DS9.

OK then - how about you GM the next one

btw, I think in the next one, we could start with 22 (or 23, and have two initial deaths) and have two mafia kills per round. That would be interesting (and quicker).

Well, you can get 22, easy without much fiddling.

Just leave out Brunt from the list.

To include Vic, have the meeting take place in a holosuite in Quark's Bar.

Weyoun comes out and tells people that there is an assassin aboard DS9, and that he has the information on the killer.

Then Sisko gets Weyoun strapped down, and then they start the Mafia round.
