You're completely right. I don't myself expect to spend more than 2 hours on multiplayer, just to see what it's like. Of course, ID have also said that Doom3 is about SP experience, and that's what it should be of course. Especially seeing, by the way, how good single player games are rare. Doom3 MP is there just because ID knows they'd be criticized if they failed to include that. Yes, some are going to complete Doom3 SP campaign and switch to MP, but the true fans of Doom, who know what the series means, this will always be about SP experience.
I didn't expect this game to be over in 20 hours when I complete it. I know it will be good for other playthroughs, custom maps, whatever, like Doom2 is still my most played shooter, not getting boring in the slightest after all these years.

but one thing i'm worried about is the fact you generally fight 1-3 monsters at a time(from what i've heard people say). doesn't that kinda ruin the gameplay as you can backtrack, abuse dumb ai or fight around corners/architexture making battles fairly easy? afaik this is also why all the environments in doom 3 are cramped and fairly small so to let the few ai monsters preform much better.
