  • You're completely right. I don't myself expect to spend more than 2 hours on multiplayer, just to see what it's like. Of course, ID have also said that Doom3 is about SP experience, and that's what it should be of course. Especially seeing, by the way, how good single player games are rare. Doom3 MP is there just because ID knows they'd be criticized if they failed to include that. Yes, some are going to complete Doom3 SP campaign and switch to MP, but the true fans of Doom, who know what the series means, this will always be about SP experience.

I didn't expect this game to be over in 20 hours when I complete it. I know it will be good for other playthroughs, custom maps, whatever, like Doom2 is still my most played shooter, not getting boring in the slightest after all these years.

      1. Apoc + Solver: FYI, Doom had night vision goggles. They existed very rarely and it lasted for the whole level/life.

      2. Solver: Night vision doesnt necessarily mean ruining a game that is supposed to be dark. In AVP, the marine had a choice between using limited number of flares and motion sensors to be able to detect any incoming enemy and the expense of becoming a brightly lit christmas tree in the dark, giving away his location.... or use nightvision mode at the expense of powering off motion sensor and blinding oneself whenever the muzzle flare went off to shoot the gun.

      • Im going to enjoy the MP just as much as SP, however, I do agree with you that Doom is primarily an SP game and that SP is going to be far better. However that still isnt going to change the fact that I will enjoy doom MP....

        • although, perhaps an interesting twist would be for Doom3 MP to have the same atmosphere WITH demons crawling about as you hunt the humans...never knowing who or what will be around the corner.

Kind of like MP with a 3rd, unpredictable party in the mix...

This way you preserve the tension of DOOM while providing a human to human MP thing...

          hmmm...

They didn't last for the entire level...it was on a time basis like the hazmat suit. I guess you were just able to finish the level fairly quickily. At least I'm pretty sure it was based on time since I swear I remember them running out. And although Doom 3 is based on the original Doom, there are many differences. Mainly it looked like the UAC was far better funded. But even putting that aside, you never really needed the night vision goggles for Doom and Doom 2.

i always like multiplayer more but solver seems to always like single player more. come to your own conclusions.

i'm not going to be able to play doom 3 until i upgrade but one thing i'm worried about is the fact you generally fight 1-3 monsters at a time(from what i've heard people say). doesn't that kinda ruin the gameplay as you can backtrack, abuse dumb ai or fight around corners/architexture making battles fairly easy? afaik this is also why all the environments in doom 3 are cramped and fairly small so to let the few ai monsters preform much better.

ai hasn't advanced much since the original doom i'm sure. one lesson the original doom taught is it's always better to have a million dumb monsters than a few strong ones. with tons of small monsters you can also use them much better in a gameplay sense. fighting in large open areas becomes more possible and still remains fun and challenging. that's why doom was brilliant - combining a fast and strong player with hundreds of dumb yet varied monsters produced fun gameplay because of all the different ways fights occured. how does doom 3 compare? is it as bad as i would fear?

actually id asked some people at qcon(last year) if they wanted this and got a positive response but it looks like they didn't bother to put it in. judging from the fact there are only a few multiplayer maps it doesn't look like they put much effort into multiplayer at all.

                      1. game is supposed to be for horror. The scary atmosphere is good enough...

                      2. To be 100% honest, the biggest excitement for me comes from the fact that ID released a new engine.. not the game itself. ID's egine has always been a foundation for other great games to come along using it... Half life for example. And how many quake3 engine based FPSes can I name? hmm... cant wait for quake 4... its supposed to use doom3 engine.

I think that even if ID released steaming pile of turd of a game, id be in a state of joygasm... as long as its moddable and the engine is good and that other developers useit for future games....

what else can i say... im so biased... ive been playing ID games for so long... doom's ingrained into my head as one of my fondest memories back in the day... i dont think i can ever see this game as being crappy...... ..... eh at least im being an honest faboy...

You're such a killjoy, in virtually every thread.

DOOM3 is perhaps the most atmopheric game of all time. It's gorgeous and it's thrilling. It does have a story and plot, one that I think is underrated, and one that I find interesting (and normally I just ignore them).

To me it sounds like somebody's just a tad bit upset that they can't run it.

                          • I can barely run it (with my GF 5200).

The question is, am I willing to spend $300 on a GF 6800 (anything less doesn't have enough longevity to justify spending a lot of money)... Are prices going to drop any time soon?
