  • well i read it and i think you both have a point about classic gaming VS UT type more features etc in that he doesnt know WTF he is talking about and that he has a bit of a point in expecting the game to catch up with the modern times in terms of features.

Yeah, but it shouldn't come as a disappointment or a surprise, as Doom3 was never announced as having some new feautures or UT-style gameplay, it has exactly the gameplay it's supposed to have .

Doom3 story is rather deeper than HL I guess. It's very nice, but of course don't expect a novel shoved in there.

But for some reason in my cfg file it says "20" not "32"

        • If you set the usecache variable to 1, I think it should do something...

            • The thing in the Gamespot review about night vision goggles...

Yes, the US Army/Marines are pretty big on night vision right now, so you'd supposed in 150 years they'd improve even more. Lets look at a few things shown in the game.

              1. Everyone wants more power for their labs. Night vision goggles take up power. If they had the power to keep up night vision goggles, they'd have the power for a better lighting system.

              2. The HR department sucks. Everyone complains about HR. HR would be the people who might allocate some funs for a nice helmet and night vision goggles. Why should the HR department suddenly do well in this instance?

              • Well, complaining about lack of night vision goggles is ridicilous. If the game is supposed to be dark, you'd think night vision would ruin it.

It doesn't even get enabled unless you set usecache to 1, and then it crashes the game for 75% of people.

They could esaely have handled this with a little story change... how about if the players character had such googles and a light on the helm, but as the first attack happens, we see a small animation where the helmet gets trashed... or something like that... that would explain it I'd say

                    • Here's a better idea: who gives a sh*t, it's DOOM. It's not supposed to be plausible. Hell, the character is about 10000% as tough as the standard man.

How come it did not crash the game for me?

Because you fell into the 25%, for whatever reason.

Reading beyond3d.com and planetdoom.com's forums, most people find it crashes before even loading the main menu.

By the way, it seems that the usecache option is seperate from the other one (below is the "suggested" settings for 512MB RAM):

image_cacheMegs 256. By default, only 32 megs (default value)are used to cache certain textures and models. Increase this value to get smoother gameplay.

image_useCache 1. Does background load image caching. Some people get crashes with this set to 1 (default is 0, and cahcemink can help make it not crash. 0 is dynamic, 1 is more static).

image_cacheMinK 32768. Maximum KB of precompressed files to read at specification time? The default is 200, but people have found up to 10fps gains with 32768.

*timedemo won't catch the improvements from these settings.

                          • Well you could be in the 25%.

                            Edit: too slow.

                            • Glad to see I'm in 25% . Actually, both with original cfg file and doing some tweaks, I haven't had any crashes or instability, and I've finished the game once already.

                              • I just wanted to see what you all think about what just hit me about multiplayer for Doom3(which may have hit you already):

The game doom, to me, has always been about scaring players. It's the way the game is designed and the story presented by means of lighting, sound etc..that makes you scared.

Because of this, I really don't think Doom3 should even be judged as a MP game. It has nothing to offer in this area. Simply because if you agree that Doom is all about playing a scary horror type game first and providing some sort of tactical shooter second, then SP is where the heart of the game is. I don't think any MP match can compare to the level of tension that Doom should be all about. Going against a human isn't going to provide the tension that a demonic, foul creature climbing a wall will. And THAT is DOOM...

If you want a good FPS MP game, there are probably better contenders out there that are tailored for it. Serious Sam is a great game which did a decent job of scaring too!!, so is Chaser (all though never played chaser in MP). Chaser is probably my favorite in terms of weaponry and shootem up fun.

And to tell you the truth, I think that most who want Doom3 do not want it for any MP experience at all. It's the last thing in their minds.

Everyone I have talked to about the game, talks about how the previous doom's scared them and they can't wait to see how this one does...no one is buying it for the MP experience I don't think.
While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.
