  • Okay, I successfully installed the games last night and started playing, not sure what to think just yet, I am having some trouble with the combat system (who attacks who and keeping everyone attacking who they should be). My party is now up to six and I have only had 3 players die (though earlier I screwed up and Imoen and my PC both were killed and I didn't have a save = restarting from scratch )

I also am having some difficulty with Inventory (keeping track of who has what and what are their "quick" items as opposed to their held items).

Aside from these minor concerns which I am sure I will straighten out, the game is going well. I am at the Friendly Arm Inn right now.

    • Save often. Level 1 characters are fragile. Very fragile.

Use pause often, give the orders, and unpause. Its good to gang the whole party onto one enemy at a time.

Ranged attacks are king. If you can kill them before they get a chance to swing at you - you win.

If you had Imoen, then you MUST have had an autosave too

      • Umm........there is an autosave?? .......(confused Sparrowhawk goes off to check game)......
Hmm, not sure what to say, there is an autosave there now, but I thought when I tried to reload after my PC was killed the first time (with Imoen, by a wolf outside of Candlekeep) that the only possibility to reload was the "Mission Pack" save. I could be wrong (and probably am ) but this is all I remember seeing......and I was looking for an autosave at the time too

        • It should autosave every time you change maps... hmmm... there could be an exception because this map change happens in a cutscene...

                    • You already have the latest patch for ToSC if you got the pack with both in (DvD case).

I'm about to enter the Cloakwood mines. I'm getting sick of baddies hanging around in mines - have they got nothing better to do? I am also always ambushed by 2 giant spiders and 2 wyverns whenever I got to travel anywhere by Cloakwood. Nice exp, but a pain to have to carry so many antidotes. I wish I'd got the Ease of Use pack to work properly, because I do find myself going back to pick up more arrows and slingshots all the bloody time.

Also, the duchess is going away next weekend so I should make some progress. (with the housework of course! )

                      • well you can install the ease of use pak anytime (I didn't do it until just before cloakwood mines). And you can install each component individually so you don't have to install the other things such as the XP cap remover, and NPC happy mode.

I used to save before travelling areas, and reload to avoid random encounters. But I'm so tough now, that isn't necessary. Although that wyvern and spider fight is a difficult random encounter. I got killed the first couple of times I tried it. But if I unleash all my spells, it isn't too bad.

As for antidote. I never carry it. Never. My main character has slow poison (part of his special abilities- which may depend on alignment- I'm lawful evil)- which actually seems to cure poison. And my cleric has one slow posion memorized. That's usually more than enough. My AC is high enough that I don't get poisoned often.

Maybe Jamski can explain why slow posion actually seems to cure posion.

In theory there are various types of posion - slow poison will cure the less serious types, but against the more serious types it will only change them into a less serious type.

In practice I've only seen two types of poison: ones that slow poison cures, and ones that kill you so quickly there's no chance to try slow poison on them.

                          • Slow poison actually cures poison in the BG games, which is not what it should do in the proper D&D rules. But who cares. The "fast type" of poison is save or die, and the "normal" poison that does damage each second or round is stopped by an antidote or Slow Poison. Just the way the game works. *shrugs*

And ALWAYS carry antidotes, because you can't cast Slow Poison very well on yourself (the damage you take each second interrupts the spell casting) and antidotes are cheap and common after all. I give everyone 2 in a quickslot.

Oh, I've had fun trying to cure poison on myself at the start of BGII when I'm playing solo and haven't got any antidotes yet (or am forbidding myself their use). It works about a third of the time... Many reloads required .
