  • Father Chaunk remained impassive. This madman was no different from the rest. Oh they all raved about something different, and to be sure, they did it differently too. But the good book says "There's nothing new under the sun" and so far that was proving true, even under this alien glow.

"This machine is nothing but an abomination! The changes it makes are nothing short of an abomination. I demand you destroy these things immediatly " - he'd started to froth a little now - " and stop playing God. These things " - the venom in the word was as clear as crystal - " are leading us down a dangerous slope, one which you will not be able to resist easily. Repent, for the end is nigh."

A silence filled the room. The mad man had stopped at last. Father Chaunk sighed inwardly. Although he knew this sort of thing would happen, he'd somewhat hoped that it wouldn't happen yet. Of course there were fringe groups in every religion, but it did seem as if the unity had packed only the most extreme fundamentalists into his escape pod.

He put on his game face; a small smile spread from the corner of his mouth, just so, and his hands spead outwards in a well practiced way.

"Reverend. You of all people know that all good things come from God above. He has given us this mighty gift, enabling us to reform Eden itself here. We need not fear these new terraformers. Yes they are powerful " - as he said this, his arm made a sweeping motion, dismissing the overtones the reverend had made - " but they are only a tool. A tool to be used, but carefully less some try to abuse it."

"Simon, please show the Reverend out."

Chaunk knew this was just the begining. As every new piece of technology was put in place, more luddites would complain, and more feircely each time. There must be some way of pacifying them he mused; but even now he'd moved on. Running three, soon to be four colonies took a lot of time and effort. Reports had to be signed, and now his newest toy, the terraformer, had to be instructed too. Today would be another long day, but not without it's rewards. His God would see to that.

He sighed and picked up the nearest data pad, signed it without reading it fully, and placed it in the done pile. In a few hours there'd be another mad reverend. Something had to be done, and soon, before he collapsed under the pressure like many church leaders in the past. Fortunatly, he had a plan. It might take a while, but it would work, and quickly.

He let the happy thought fill his mind. Soon it'd be easier.

      • The chancellor sat with his most pre-eminent engineers.

" gentlemen, word is spreading through the student body that other fcations have discovered how to mass produce terraformers. I want to know why the leading centre of learning does not yet have this ability .. . It just not good enough!!"

The Dean of engineering spoke defiantly . . ." Chancellor, any failing is due mainly to lack of resources. You gave large endowments to the economists and business faculty so they could work on establishing "indiustrial economics". Those faculties have attracted the best students with promises of grants and good accomodation while the engineering faculty has to beg to get a bunson burner. besides that, most of the so-called engineering budget goes to the Professor Gunsanammo with his projects down in the caves . . . I don't even know what he is supposed to be working on there."

The chancellor interrupted " Surely he reports to you? ...."

Prof Gunsanammo spoke up, " Aas you know chancellor, we have created a secure installation to address certain societal needs. I have limited my staff from socializing with people outside the facility. It was my understanding that it was desirable to maintain a certain level of secrecy. I do however, provide periodic reports to the dean"

The dean snorted " yes but so heavily edited that even I have no idea what you are doing"

The chancellor sighed . . . " well I think that full reports to me would not constitute a scurity risk . .. In ther meantime I think it would be helpful if you talked generally about the facility"

Professor Gunsanammo looked resigned, " Of course . .. We have assembled a crack team of engineers with support from mathematicians, Physicist and chemists with the specific goal of developing defensive capabilities. We have begun studies in a number of areas but it is difficult to predict which will result in the first significant breakthrough. We have been suprised however at some of the potential mathematical applications. I'm not a mathematician, but apparently, if you apply principle of math in a non-linear fashion, it appears that a more powerful weapon may result. It may be a while before the theory can be applied in practice but the theory looks sound

The chancellor stood " Thank you. I do need to get to another meeting but I wanted to alert you that a patrol indicated they heard 'something' out in the pink brambles. They didn't find anything but each member of the patrol was suddenly incapacitated with a searing headache. The biology department is reporting they believe there may be other animal life of unknow nintelligence on this planet . They discovered what looks to be the carcass of a worm-like creature. Your students should be advised to avoid those bramble patches whenever possible

        • Sven , a fresh faced boy of 18, squirmed in his seat as the history professor droned onward about their forbears back on earth. This earth seemed a foreign place to Sven .. . He remembered very little of it , scant and fleeting pictures of lands a sky so very different than the world he considered home.

Sven's began to focus on the professor as the holovid began to play, showing wagons travelling across unending grasslands. He quickly scolled through his auto-recorder of the lecture . . . settlement of the Americas, wagon trains, scouts, explorers," Go west young man"

The parrallels were striking. The university right now needed explorers and scouts to discover new territories and find the other humans that everyone knew were out there. The classroom and a bio-chem major seemed unexciting, staid, unworthy of a MAN that wanted to contribute in a major way.

While the lecture continued, Sven began searching the database for organizations that were recruiting. Police and university security seemed too establishment and besides Sven enjoyed the contraband xenorum as much as anyone. The navy . . . well for now they just wanted engineers until such rime as they could design a ship that would function in the waters of Chiron. Suddenly a site caught his eye and he increased the size of the holovid. It showed fit and attractive men and women trekking into the great unknown expanses, discovering new lifeforms. The holovid displayed scene after scene of spectacular beauty, depictions of a wonderfully scenic Chiron as yet undiscovered. Sven knew that these were merely computer projections but it was irrelevant. He wanted to know what was out there.

He quickly palmed his screen and with that it was done. In 3 weeks he would be inducted into the 10th Rangers for training in preparation to join a scout patrol slated to explore the southern expanse. He slumped back in his seat and thought about how he might break the news to his mother.

          • Just a general note that I'm extremely busy this weekend, so unless I find an opening, the turn will only be played late tomorrow or again late on Sunday (GMT). That's of course assuming it gets to me by then.

                  • Wow but is fosse a Civ4 player?? I thought it was work issues with him.

Civ4 won't be an issue for me for about another 2 years . . . By then I might have a system that can run it

NO real surprise there-- It seems like the reviews are much better for CIV4 but after CIV3, they could hardly have made a worse game

If its a good game, I will play it eventually but I think I would always try to maintain the courtesy of a decent turn rate in my smax games

                        • I'll be getting Civ4 around Christmas time I think, so I'll see what it's like then. Definatly don't remember this much drop off around civ3, so I guess that's a good thing for firaxis.

I agree - it seemed like there was more "buzz" on CIV4 and from whatr I am hearing its a pretty good game once they get the bugs out
