    • Apologies about the short notice, but something has come up, and I will be unavaliabe this weekend. Unfortunatly, this is likely to continue throughout the month of December, meaning weekday turns only.

I'll let you know if this changes.

      • Chancellor Flubber surveyed the assembled faculty on his vidscreen. He was due to meet woth them in 10 minutes and he knew that the meeting could be contentious. Each of the deans were energetic and eagar AND completely convinced that it would be their research and efforts which would be the crucial element in their success. Bob the Builder, the enthusiastic Dean of Engineering, was talking animatedly to some colleagues. The Chancellor had seen his requests and arguments for former construction and knew they were compelling. Off to one side, he could see the economists flipping charts and graphs across their holoscreens. They had enjoyed the accolades when a free market economy had worked as predicted but were now suffering a loss of prestige as resources were diverted from them to other areas. They were advocating the benefits of environmental; economics now but the timeframes before benefits could be reaped would be far too long.

Slumped sullenly in the corner sat a lone xenobiologist. His memos had made it abundently clear that he felt that the free market expansion was causing unknown environmental impacts. In addition he had lobbied several other departments into supporting his paper that claimed that there was other sentient worm-like life on Chiron.

Finally the chancellor shifted the viewer to rest on the deans of the military academies. Each sat stiffly in their starched uniforms. The chancellor knew that they found the freewheeling style of most of the academics to be disordered, inefficient, somewhat unsettling actually. Their recent memos had advocated increased spending on military mattters. In fact they had seized on the "other lifeforms" issue as a defence matter and had listed at great length the threats that other life might pose. Basically, they did not know what was out there and it worried them.

The chancellor turned from the vidscreen and glanced at his speech. "Paper, I don't know why I still use it . . . I guess it just feels more substantial. " The chancellor rose and headed to the assembly hall

        ------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile at "The Scholar's Quill" in downtown University Base, a group of research techs gathered to gossip and down a few ales.

        "Scott whats that yer drinkin'"
"Well , the barkeep told me it was Xenobrew. They use some of the local plants to make it. It don't taste half bad and it has a mighty kick . . . plus its only 1 credit a glass"

"WOT!! I paid 4 credits for this beer"
"Thats the way she goes . . .Barkeep told me that hops and barley are running short so the price will just keep going up"

"Darn gov'ment with their free market ideas. A common joe can't afford anything good anymore . . . and I have no idea what they do with all them taxes"

" Well, this is supposed to be hush-hush but everyone over at chip development knows . .. Apparently base 23 got some sort of spy training camp going on. They don't get no weapons but do learn how to do a lot of bad crap. Remember Phil what was called up for the Rangers? Well I called my sisters. Three of 'em work with the rangers . They seen every class that graduated and no Phil. Then Bob Parsons, you know my cousin, he sees Phil outside camp 23 and calls out . But he says Phil just sped up, turned a corner and disappeared"

" ah it could all be a coincidence"

" NO way!! I had Bess I records look Phil up. It says that Phil is on detached duty from the Rangers at the Chancellor's office here in University Base. Are you tellin' me that Phil is right here in town and hasn't been here for a pint . .. or to see his momma for cripe's sake. Somethin's goin' on"

" Ahhh but Phil will be all right. Cleverest feller I ever saw. Do ya remember that game of BlasterBall against those Library guys?? They never knew what hit 'em"

Given that you are generally very fast, I know that I, for one, am fine with that. The game will be stalled with me for five days anyway. I become unavailable Sunday afternoon and can't play again until Friday night.

At our pace of the last few days, even weekends off will result in 4-5 turns getting through everyone in a week and thats an excellent pace

No problem . I figure even if everyone is doing their best, we will all have stints when we can't play. IMHO thats fine. Besides I expect you all to be understanding when I stall the game for FIVE days starting Sunday

                      • You know . . I had left PBEMing for a while and had forgotten the feeling of anticipation when waiting for the turn. Even though this game is VERY early, I am already feeling it. I check my email every morning and every night, hoping the turn is there

The University are noteworthy in that the are currently favorites to win, they being the strongest faction present. (On paper anyway.)

                              Amen to that!

I guess I can take my time with the turn now, as it'll be sat in an inbox until Friday. Shame really, Senethro missed me by about an hour

                              I'll send it out tomorrow.

                              • Father Chaunk slowly stood, feeling his vertebrae crack into place. Time had taken it's toll on his body. As he looked in the mirror on his wall, he saw a shrivelled old man, merely a shadow of his former self. "Grey" was now the colour of his hair, and "thin" would be the word most people would use to describe it.

He was not a pleasant sight.

He sighed, entered the shower, and allowed himself to be revived by the near scalding water. Today wasn't just any day though.

Today was election day. The first election day - with more than one party that is. The most important election day so far.

                                Turn out was expected to be in the 70's and no one seemed to know which was the vote was going to go. Dian had played a strong hand like the seasoned politician that he was. Everyone knew that this election hinged on one thing, and one thing only;

                                Doctrine.

Dian had made it so. He knew that in a theo-democratic society, such as this one, the majority voted not on education - God would surely lead their children on the right paths, so it did not matter - or health - is God not the one who ordains all times? - but doctrine... Subtle differences in teaching and beliefs had destroyed the church over the ages, causing schisms to form.

And now there was one forming in Father Chaunk's diocese.

Thoughts were still spining in his head as he left his bedroom fifteen minutes later. "What if...? What if...? What if...?" Round and round they went.

Today would be a long day.
