Good one, you had me going. But I will be genuinely surprised if this is still going tomorrow.

    Indeed.

Hmm, now you've quoted me you might have to edit your post as well.

      But I doubt it.

This is obviously a joke. Who says there can be only one? Besides, maybe this was mainly CivFanatics idea and Apolyton is just playing along. Either way, happy April 1st to all of you.

Oh, and congrats to both sites for all the work put into the joke. Nicely done, I appreciate it!

This is an obvious joke. However, if we can get separate OTs, it might be a good idea.

This whole April Fool's thing is a ruse. Merger was prepared but member opinion had not been gauged. By announcing on April 1, managements can back down on the whole idea by proclaiming it a joke if response is overwhelmingly negative. Gives them an honorable way out, if necessary.

Whether April 1 timing was intentional or not, it is fortuitous. If there really IS a merger, here's hoping the RESULT isn't a (bad) joke. For either or both sites to collapse would be (VERY) bad news, indeed.

I think it's mostly an Apolyton initative. The article about the merger is clearly written with an Apolyton focus. And the page they linked to is very close to 'Poly's layout, rather than CFC's.

IMO, it was more of a test to see whether we'd like the layout they have in the works for 'Poly. I definitely approve of that new layout

                          This statement is rather suspicious.

From experience as soon as the fee is paid you go online within an hour or two the most. However that would only happen during a working day, and Sunday ain't a working day

Also I see not a single post from DanQ confirming the merger so I guess this is a bad joke after all?

I wonder, how many would push things toward a merger between the two sites if this would turn to be an April Fool's joke?

Two of the Internet`s leading Civilization fan sites have forged a permanent alliance. Dan "DanQ" Quick, Chief Owner/Administrator of Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS), and "Thunderfall", Site Administrator of Civilization Fanatics Center (CFC), are merging their respective operations to form Civilization Junction (civjunction.com). The two will take on the role and titles of Co-Owner/Administrator, much like DanQ and fellow ACS co-founder Markos "MarkG" Giannopoulos did in 1998 when merging their individual CivII fan sites.

By the end of the month, most of ACS` and CFC`s services will be integrated and made available to the public under the CivJunction (CJ) banner. Among the highlights: the disbandment of Apolyton`s Directory service in favor of CivFanatics` Downloads Database, the en-masse incorporation of Apolyton`s CivGroups service and moulding that site`s PLUS subscription service into a pay-for model for key operations including "Game of the Month", "Hall of Fame", and "Junction University". Work is already underway to merge the sites` two forums. After the merge, the combined forum will have nearly 10 millions posts, making it the 77th biggest forum on the web.

ACS and CFC staff have been working hard behind the scenes for much of the current year in preparation for this announcement. Other than Quick and Thunderfall themselves, many of the existing staff members are expected to join the staff of the combined site, although they may play a different role. Individuals who have served on neither parent site`s staff will also be a part of CJ`s team.

This is a truly exciting time for the Civilization community. We believe it`s in the community`s best interest to merge the two biggest and oldest fan sites, to make it the ultimate destination for all things Civilization, said Thunderfall.

We are seizing on the opportunity to combine the extensive resources of both Apolyton and CivFanatics that have been cultivated for many years, said Quick when asked to comment. Some may ask why we are taking this significant step now. To them I say, why not now?
                            Hmmm...1st April...interesting

Both separate (for now) sites are running vBulletin. That vastly simplifies merging the databases. If it works the way we intend it, people registered at both forums will retain their username for CJ, with their posts at both former forums counting as theirs.

This OTF thread really explains a lot behind this decision. We just see that merging with CFC is the best way of providing the Civ community with a site that has the best of everything - something that can't now be said about either CFC or ACS as separate entities.

Finally, the announcement date. No, it's not a coincidence. Civjunction goes online now, and server bills are paid by month - today is the date when we officially go online and start.
