You can go wrong by being either too specific or too general, I am merely suggesting we move a bit closer to the spiecific side, not all the way.

On the norwegian site I referred to in one of my earlier posts they have managed to be very specific with only 15 items on the rule list (17 in the full version)

I will however admit that some Unwritten rules that are currently uniformily enforced that most people know, should be added. And we are in the process of doing just that, and have been preparing such an update long before this subject came up in this thread.

Civil suggestions are always welcome... But I think some people forget that this is a private site, and membership is a privilege, not a right. When you sign up, you agree to follow the rules of the site... even plus members are told that they must follow the rules of the site... and one of those rules is to do as the admin and mods say...

Again, there is no way the rules can cover every situation, and the owners have the right to enforce any rules they so do desire. While there will always be people that disagree... (and they are welcome to their opinion) it's not their site. Yes, it is a community, and it would be different if some people weren't here... but their would be NO community if Markos and Dan didn't create it, and maintain it.

I think a lot of this could could have been diverted if this was the first post Ming or Mark had made in the thread. Mark/Ming, your early arguments were weak imo and didn't really get to the heart of the question at all - this does, as well as honestly admitting that there are some improvements that can be made.

Essentially attempts to remove discretion in this setting are just futile. The rules should set out basic principles (more can probably be done in this regard) and no more. Unfortunately, mods are human, and the fact discretion is necessary means mistakes will sometimes be made. And yeah, if you are a pain in the ass, chances are those mistakes wont work in your favour. That's life, I'm afraid.

A situation came up, and I had to handle it... If you don't like the way it was handled, then maybe you should be pissed at the cause of the problem, not the person stuck with cleaning up the mess. Believe me when I say I had better things to do with my free time then waste as much as I had to in cleaning up that nasty situation, and being caught in the middle in the process.

I did that because these things are wrong, not because I wanted to be a kiss ass as many thought. So, in my view, I haven't changed very much when I take on a mod who uses his mod abilities to enforce the rules... to troll the posters. I would never have believed that would ever really be happening Bill, had it not happened to me, and repeatedly, but I don't have to tell you that. Anyway, I'm tired of it.

Quick suggestion, while we're getting all touchy feely here:

The veterans might have some idea of what is or is not acceptable around this place. But, from the perspective of a noob, it would be nice to actually start off some with some guidance about how to behave around here.

At present teh rulz are buried a few paragraphs down, in the middle of the faq. And the faq is one small link amongst many. When I first signed up, I spent quite some time trying, unsuccesfully, to find a set of forum rules. (Honest!!) In the end, I gave up and tried just following the flock.

Even after the M&M's started indiscriminately closing my threads and referring me to the faq, I still couldn't find the bugger.

Would it be possible to make Teh Rulz stand out a bit more?
Or does anyone know a good optometrist?
