      Do you ?

I am glad, honestly, that we are able as a community, to air our concerns and perhaps, "agree to disagree"

I want to say Yes this is a privately owned site and Yes we as the members are given a privilege to be here and be active.

No, we dont have to like how the issues are handled and yes sometimes things dont go as we would like.

Personaly, I love this place. I know Markos, you stated you have not asked nor required respect, but many of us love Apolyton and call it our home. I would say that you are very forthright in telling us this. But please know that we as members of the community pay tribute to what you and Dan have done and continue to do. Ming as been a stalwalt and indomitable figure. So have many others.

Apolyton to me, Brother Bruce, is not a place to take advantage of, to me it is a place I love and enjoy bringing amusing pictures and some amusing comments. I love playing civilization games and the brotherhood associated with here. I have seen baiting going on and it is wrong, but feel we all can continue to enjoy this ACS which is home to many a soul!

      Ok

Thank you all for making this such a wonderful to place to unwind and have some fun.

Lets go folks, focus on positives and lets all live together in a peaceful & harmonious environment

I think the key is 'focus on positives'. The approach to moderation that some would prefer, summarized by bongo here earlier, is not a good ideal to be pursuing. I see this as the basic concept behind the many national legal systems. By focusing on negative issues, a large pool of people that 'toe the line' of how far they can push the rules develops, the society is polarized by this, and human-scale solutions to most problems become inpossible- real community disintegrates and is replaced by rigid protocols for interaction.

The US is a prime example of how this will be taken to an extreme, being made up of people of very diverse backgrouds. The various social groups are unable to resolve problems by acting at a personal level, and instead seek resolution through legislation and judicial decision. This encourages perpetual growth and a certain form of "power" for the society, but destroys community at the personal level that makes it worthwhile to be an individual member of it.

Sure, the indoctrinization literature here has room for improvement, but making it an endlessly recursive laundry list of 'no's would be a disaster IMO.

            ...
Firstly, enforcing rules is *not* about "focus on positives", quite the contrary. Admin action almost always mean someone has been a bad boy.

Secondly, I do *not* want an endless list of dos and don'ts.

I *do* want the rules to be properly codified though.

Not to mention easy to find. As an oldtimer I know my way around this site well enough to find what I need, but as Terra Nullius said, newcomers may run into trouble.

Here is the summarized rules from the site I linked to earlier in this thread. I've made a fast translation for the norwegian-challenged out there.

            1. Vær snill og grei. Saklighet og høflighet er viktig.
            - Be nice, to the point and polite
            2. Bruk emnefeltet godt.
            - Keep the subject field to the point
            3. Forsøk å beholde temaet i tråden.
            - Try to keep the threads original topic
            4. Pornografi, rasisme og diskriminering er forbudt.
            - NO pornography, racism or discrimination
            5. Feilposting blir ikke belønnet.
            - Posting in the wrong forum will not be rewarded
            6. Ikke reklamer for websider, butikker, etc. Dette gjelder særlig bedrifter og deres ansatte.
            - Do not advertise for companies, shops etc.
            7. Piratkopiering, og informasjon om det, er forbudt.
            - Software piracy and any information concerning is it not allowed
            8. Kjøp og salg foregår i Bruktmarkedet.
            - Buying and selling is done elsewhere
            9. Bumping og spamming er forbudt.
            - No bumping or spamming.
            10. Avatar er maks 80x80 piksler og 6 kB. Personlig foto er maks. 100x100 piksler og 20kB.
            ---
            11. Signaturer er maks 4 linjer. Ingen bilder i signaturen.
            - signatures are max 4 lines, no pics
            12. Respekter moderatorer og administratorer.
            - Respect mods and admins
            13. Om du blir utestengt, respekter det.
            - If you get banned, take it like a man
            14. Du er ansvarlig for din brukerkonto.
            - You are responsible for your account
            15. Eventuelle reaksjoner på brudd på retningslinjer vurderes ut i fra alvorlighetsgrad.
            - Rections to violations of rules vil be judged on degree of seriousness.

And then you have the full version which elaborate on each point and add a few more. Still a short read though.

I think the current forum rules all end up with "a Mod don't like your post(s) and will punish you accordingly"

What I want to see is "a Mod has found your post (exhibit a) to be in violation with forum rule #(n) and will punish you accordingly"

Heck, we may even se one user PM another saying "hoy there, your last post violates forum rule #(n), you should remove it yourself before a mod sees it"

I also see benerfits to clearer rules. I have been banned once and my violation was missing a mod's post telling posters to cease and desist. NO PMs .

I will say that the mod in question did respond to my inquiries politely. While I came to understand the decision, I never really agreed with it but frankly being banned is not that much punishment anyway.

I have seen (other) mods be less than judicial in their application of their powers and its in those situations that rules that essentially are "Do what the mods say" are less effective.

Overall I like this site and find the moderation to be reasonable. The existence of bad calls is no more than one sees in any sport with a referree. Sometimes the ref blows a call-- sometimes its a judgement call. I can live with that easily enough.

Just try to give people a better sense of the rules !!

I feel that if I could somehow make an effective cross that the mods would be repelled by its power.

Banning no. However he used to love to have a few drinkies and delete my threads. So, if he starts up deleteing again (falls off the wagon?) then when he gets to the pearly gates he'll have to explain why he destroyed so many crosses, get banned from heaven, and I'll get the last laugh.
