  • The only real good thing Johnson did in Dallas was find a moron in Minnesota. I don't like him at all. Every program he's run is in a shambles when he leaves.

EDIT: How timely. Here is remembrance from an nfl.com staffer.
Four years later, the team traded him to the Minnesota Vikings for five players and six draft picks (which led to Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson). The deal helped the Cowboys build their dynasty in the 1990s.
The Dallas Cowboys managed to score big with their first-ever draft pick. In the years since, there's been a mixed bag of blockbuster talents and big-time busts.

    • Wha...? Jimmy Johnson left Miami and they were very successful afterwards - won the national championship the next year, IIRC. Then he left the Cowboys and they won another superbowl under some random idiot who had nothing to do with it, and only collapsed after Jerry Jones proved incapable of managing the salary cap (and/or traded one last superbowl for a decade of suckage).

He then went to Miami (Dolphins), and while not terribly successful there, he didn't leave them a shambles either - he built them a competent defense, when they had none (look at those draft picks - Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Sam Madison - very good picks for a playoff or near-playoff team drafting in the second half of each draft). Wannstedt was his successor there, which may be why you're confused (he is a terrible, terrible coach).

I have no idea how you can say Jimmy Johnson left teams a shambles... you can say he was a bad coach if you like, or you didn't like his attitude and his 'bad boy' teams, but he certainly didn't leave his teams in shambles.

      • Jerry Jones, OTOH, is a latter-day Al Davis in training.

BTW, it might be Jones' draft value chart, not Johnson's.

        • Johnson left Oklahoma State with questions about his program. Same in Miami. Same in Dallas. Don't agree, that's cool.

          • Jimmy Johnson gets credit for the chart; who knows where it actually originated.

Miami's problems were more under Erickson than Johnson. Some of the issues did occur during Johnson's watch, but the majority were Erickson's responsibility. OK State had problems in 1978-9 (right when Johnson was arriving, so not likely related to him) and in 1989, well after he left and confirmed by the NCAA not to be related to him. Primarily they were related to pay-for-play with Hart Lee ****s, who was recruited prior to the 1985 season - two years after Johnson left (his last OkSt season was 1983).

And what questions arose after his Dallas tenure, other than questions as to whether Switzer should get any credit at all for winning that last Super Bowl?

              • I'm waiting for "Why Bill Parcells sucked" next...?

Though I will note that JJ only coached for 9 years in total ... seems a bit odd to me that he's in their HoF. A good 9 years, and his Miami teams were untouchable (mostly), but still - 9 years isn't much.

                • 52-9 in 5 years in Miami is absolutely ridiculous though. And 5 of those losses were in that first season (so 44-4 in 4 years!!).

                  • Certainly, and that's why he is in. Certainly they were super dominant for those five years (and another year or two after that). Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders are in the HoF I guess also... still, very short career compared to others.

                      • Jaguars signed S Chris Banjo.
Banjo participated in this week's minicamp on a tryout basis. The former SMU safety went undrafted in 2012 and has never appeared in an NFL game.

                            • Revis to TB, for real this time... and 6/96 contract with no guaranteed money. Interesting. Probably a good deal for TB, but we'll see how he recovers from the ACL surgery.

                              • First round of the draft last night was pretty crazy, with offensive linemen and rush specialists dominating the top ten. It's weird to see so few skill position players (1 QB, 0 RBs, 3 WRs and a TE) going in the first round - only one in the top 15.
