Meanwhile, Griffin was headed for an MRI exam to determine the extent of the damage on his re-injured right knee. He was already playing with a big black brace, having sprained the lateral collateral ligament about a month ago against the Baltimore Ravens. He hadn't looked his usual self in the two games he had played since, and he was obviously hobbled after falling awkwardly while throwing an incomplete pass in the first quarter Sunday.

In the fourth quarter, Griffin labored on a 9-yard run that made him look 32 years old instead of 22.

"He said, `Hey, trust me. I want to be in there, and I deserve to be in there,"' Shanahan said. "I couldn't disagree with him."

Shanahan said he'll probably second-guess himself over his decision. He has the entire offseason to do so.

Not saying Shanahan was right. Just posting his side of the decision process. RG3 wanted in, and Shanahan saw his condition in practice and pregame warmups. Hopefully the injury isn't too terrible and he can recover by training camp.

Yeah. You dont ruin a guys career for a wildcard game

The question for RG III is going to be how long a career he'll have in the NFL. He'll continue to get banged on, and banged on hard, when he runs, and if he's unstable on his feet, then he won't be much of a standard QB. If I was going to bet on longevity, I'd say it's likely Luck will still be making TD passes long after Griffin is doing whatever he'll do after football.

Griffin needs to take a lesson from Wilson and Luck. Both are nearly just as fast as Griffin but they're more selective when they run. Griffin ran 120 times this year even with missing time. What was Vick's career high in carries? 123 in that healthy 16 game 1039 yard rushing season. Vick hit 120 carries only one other year in his career.

In fact, since Bobby Douglass ran 141 times in 1972, only 4 QB's have had 120+ carry seasons: Mike Vick in 2004 and 2006, Tim Tebow in 2011, Cam Newton in 2011 and 2012, and RG3 in 2012. Conspicuous in their absence are Steve Young (career high: 76 attempts in 1992) and Randall Cunningham (career high: 118 in 1990, though he would typically register < 100 carries per season).

RG3 needs to get down from 8 carries a game to 5-6 if he wants to stay healthy.


By the way, I am surprised Ryan Tannehill only had 49 rushes this year. Wasn't he expected to be a running QB with questionable passing chops?

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had total reconstructive surgery of his right knee early Wednesday morning to repair torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, but he is expected to be ready for the opener of the 2013 NFL regular season, according to team sources familiar with the determination made by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews.

The surgery was completed by Wednesday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

The torn ACL was diagnosed late Tuesday as a complete tear of the patella graft that was used to repair Griffin's torn ACL suffered at Baylor in 2009. A team source said Andrews likely will use a patella graft from Griffin's left knee to repair the most recent tear.

Griffin's recovery is projected at six to eight months, barring any setbacks, sources said. The rehabilitation plan will focus primarily on strengthening Griffin's quadriceps to help protect and help stabilize the knee, according to sources. The reconstruction of the LCL is considered a complication, but sources said Andrews informed the Redskins it should rehab well during the same six-to-eight-month time frame as the ACL injury.

Under this projected time frame of surgery, recovery and rehab, Griffin should be able to participate at some level during training camp in August and be ready to open the season in September, according to the sources.

Griffin thanked his fans for their support in a tweet Wednesday morning.

"Thank you for your prayers and support. I love God, my family, my team, the fans, & I love this game. See you guys next season," he wrote.

The NFL Network reported that, after looking at the game file, coach Mike Shanahan believes Griffin suffered his knee injury on the play before the errant snap where his knee gave out as he tried to plant his leg. On that penultimate play, Griffin was sacked by Seahawks defensive end Bruce Irvin.
