When I look at Ovechkin I see a guy that will get to the HoF (unless some disaster strikes) based on numbers alone. But to be considered a great, he is missing things from his resume. So far he has failed to lead his team very far, whether it be Olympics or NHL. He has time but playoff success will determine his legacy
Iginla is already a lock for the hall of fame as some of his numbers are astoundingly good. he has a reputation as a big time leader and has some Olympic gold but again a lack of playoff success tarnishes the legacy. Other than one Kipper fuelled run, every other Flames team has been a bust in the playoffs
ben -- just so you know, when we are talking being among the true greats of the game ( and not just the much larger club that is the HoF) most people apply a high standard. You need to be pretty consistent over the years at a high level-- thats for sure. But to be a "great", to me, you need to be the very best at some point at a minimum and beyond that you need to do sometrhing exceptional.
Going back to Luongo he has the consistent years with good to great stats. Where he falls down is that he has never been the unquestioned best goalie inn the league . To date thats clear. He also hasn't done something really special (in a good way). In his Olympic gold, the big story was how good Ryan Miller was in almost stealing the gold in a game Canada completely dominated. With respect to playoffs, Luongo marred a long playoff run this year by interespersing excellence with absolute awfulness. People will remember the awfulness despite the fact that his aggregate stats were simply averagish this year. Lastly on Luongo is the negative-- the meltdowns. Any goalie can gave a bad game but I would wager that Luongo has more 6s and 7s and 8s in playoff games than any other goalie in recent memory and certainly more than any goalie that has any legitimate claim of being within the top 10 goalies of their SEASON.You don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

Oh and Ben
I was going to leave this alone but your assertion that I didn't know the criteria for the vezina is an example of why so few people on here like you. You essentially called me a liar in a situation where your assertion was ludicrous beyond belief. (I had opined in here that Thomas was the clear cut choice for the vezina before the playoffs had gone very far ) So I am left with two choices
1. You are so very stupid to believe that I do not know the vezina is a regular season award despite my many many years following hockey and the fact that I had easily chosen a winner in this very thread including citing their regular season stats.
OR
2. You was just being annoyingly pedantic in picking up any sentence where you can construe it as someone being 'wrong" despite the fact that you knew their meaning. In this regard I was actually surprised that you weren't trying to say I thought it was a calendar year award since I did say it went to the best goalie on the "year".
personally my view is #2. I don't believe you are stupid enough for #1 to apply. So since I believe you are being idiotically pedantic by trying to show someone is wrong even when you know their meaning, I have no issue with insulting you for being an idiot or whatnot. Most posters don't seize on imprecision in posting as some proof of something when the obvious truth is clearly different.
Bottom line
Thomas owned everyone in the regular season-- Vezina
Thomas owned everyone in the playoffs -- Conn Smythe
Thomas won --- Stanley Cup
Thomas was clearly the best goalie this season in all respects. He essentially did something very special and an epic year in which he was simply the best. He doesn't have enough years of consistent good years to be considered among the greats but this is still a hell of a yearYou don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

No cup, no hardware, no 500 goals, no 1500 points. He wouldn't be the worst inductee in the HOF, but then neither would Trevor Linden. I find it hilarious that Iggy is a lock, but Luongo isn't.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.
