clinch   /klɪntʃ/ Show Spelled[klinch] Show IPA
      –verb (used with object)
      1.to settle (a matter) decisively:
To everyone else using the English language, you clinch a division title only when it is mathematically impossible for anyone else to pass them and take the title. Football and hockey standings often have little "x" or "y"s or asterisks denoting this and NOBODY is considered to have "clinched" a title until it becomes impossible to lose it . So even if Vancouver (or anyone) has an 19 point lead with 10 games to go-- so its freaking obvious they SHOULD and WILL win the division, you do not speak of clinched until its done. As it stands Vancouver has clinched nothing. Do I think Vancouver SHOULD win the title? Thats a very different question and my answer is yes. They came out of this road trip better than I expected and are still competing well even when Luongo is not great

But you always have your own definitions for words as is evidenced by the fact that you claimed that Burrows had out-produced Iginla despite having fewer goals and assists etc etc

      • On your bet-- If its truly a bet about the skill and ability of a player then an injury provision makes sense.

After all Robin Regehr could out-point Ovechkin if some goon hacked Ovie and broke his leg in three places and caused him to miss all 82 games. That doesn't make Regehr a better point producer

        • Oh and Ben

I take nothing you write even remotely seriously. You seem to delight in misusing words or pedantically quibbling about terminology when you know precisely what the writer was intending to convey. You frequently backtrack or restate your arguments without ever acknowledging you are doing so and even more frequently restate the arguments of others in inaccurate and misleading ways.

            Sorry man--

My hope and belief all along is that the Flames have the talent to be a playoff team-- Watching them at jome against Minny I doubted them since it was such an awful effort but since then they are looking good. Its only three games and I have been disappointed enough this season already so I am not too excited yet-- But 6-3-1 in their last 10 is a step in the right direction.

Detroit? Howard seems to be the real deal and with all those walking wounded coming back I have to think Detroit will make the playoffs and then be a very difficult "underdog". This team, on paper, is not that much worse than the team that made the finals the last few years so I could see them truly making a big push with a healthy roster.

Last night though it was nice to see the Flames manage to fight through multiple Red Wing PP chances and come back for the win. The Iggy Bourque Stajan line is coming together. Now its a matter of getting some more production from Langow (last nights goal was only his second in 14 games), Hagman Higgins, Kotalik etc . If Boumeester can actually chip in sometimes that would be a bonus.

Overall this roster is stronger and deeper than when they began the year. But thats "on paper". I need to see more of what they do on the ice

                • Has the quality of NHL fallen that far with all those stupid expansion teams? Or is there another (or some other) reason a 48 year old can still make a roster?

But 5/6/7th defensemen don't need to be particularly good.

                    • Flubber, it's right there in what I said. 'Clinched the division until the end of their road trip.' I don't really see why people are *****ing about the comment. It's entirely accurate if unpalatable for Flames fans.

It is impossible for Colorado to overtake Vancouver until after they get back from the road trip. Is there anything factually wrong with what I said? I've used the term 'clinched' in the correct fashion.

Feel free to take a shot though. That's really going to cause me to consider your opinions more...

I'd be considered a sage if I correctly predicted that Regehr would outpoint Ovechkin. Injuries are a part of the game, and a players value is negatively affected by injuries.

                            FOR THE SECOND ****ING TIME.

That is NOT what you said. You said:
Clinched the division after the road trip from hell

Either way your sentence was not correct. "clinched until the end of the road trip" doesn't make any sense.

It is impossible for Colorado to overtake Vancouver until after they get back from the road trip. Is there anything factually wrong with what I said?
YES, starting from the simple fact is YOU CONTINUALLY GET WHAT YOU SAID WRONG.

You would be considered an epic ****ing moron, just as you are now. Nothing changes here.

What's the problem there? The road trip is not yet finished.

If the road trip were already done, I can see why you'd object to it, but at this point all I'm saying here is that they can't lose it before they get back.
