There is absolutely no way that review should have given the Saints the ball.
I understand that the rules were changed because of the Hochuli call, but when both teams stop play because of a blown whistle, it's totally unacceptable to use what happens after the whistle.
And the most inexplicable part of that whole series, to me, is why the Saints got their timeout back. Teams aren't allowed to challenge plays in OT, but that's exactly what the Saints did. The Redskins were about to begin their next play, the Saints called timeout, the booth got a chance to look at the film, a review was called for, the play was somehow reversed, and then the Saints got their timeout back. wtf is that?
Calling a timeout to give the refs a chance to look at the film can either be viewed as dastardly or clever, but either way, a timeout was called. It served the purpose. Why should the Saints have gotten it back? They ended up not needing the timeout, of course, but the whole process bugs me. The fact that the timeout was returned to the Saints shows that, in essence, the Saints were allowed their own instant replay in OT even though that clearly goes against the spirit of the rules.
Ugh.
There were other terrible calls in the game, but that one had the greatest impact on the final outcome. Grr.
(Despite all that, I don't blame the refs for the loss. There is an element of chance in all sports, and sometimes that chance is a result of poor officiating. It's a shame, but it's the way it is. If the Redskins had simply done everything they needed to do, they would have won the game. But it bothers me nonetheless, because that's the best game a very bad team has played all year, and it was played against a very good team, and they still managed to lose, partly because of their own bad play, and partly because of factors outside of their control.)
