Comparing stats to even 20 years ago just doesn't work. Despite the fact that SF originated the West Coast offense during the Montana/Young era, the pass still wasn't as prominent then as it is now. Every QB's completion percentage and yards are way up over the past 10 years. Just look at the best QB of all time -- Elway. He had about a 55% completion percentage.

At similar ages, I'm saying that statistically Montana and Young don't even sniff the jocks of Brees and Rivers. They are well ahead in everything except playoff success, and that's only because Montana had already won 2 superbowls.

I'm comparing yardage, and TDs. Those are stats which don't vary as much as completion percentage. Brees + Rivers have thrown far more and far more successfully than the combination of Montana/Young at the same ages. Completion percentage is the only area where Young + Montana compare favourably. Don't forget that Rivers/Brees/Flutie are all Coryell style QBs, while Montana/Young are West Coast style.

It's not like the rules changes since the mid-90's, like allowing QB headset communication, enforcing the 5 yard chuck, and all the ones protecting the QB, opened up the passing game to a ridiculous degree.
