It not only allows you to sort by position and such, but it allows you [the commish] to remove players once drafted so we can be sure to find the correct BAPAY, as long as the BAPAYer is not an idiot.
Since the above list is what they purport to use for the leagues that use an auto-pick, I assumed there wouldn't be a "better" list for BAPAY purposes (it wouldn't make a lot of sense that entire leagues pick based on one list when a better one is available). But I confess I had never looked closely at the mechanics (last year we did a live draft and the year before was my first so I didn't pay atention to those details). I am agreeable to any method that works-- as long as the rules are clearly known , thats all I think is needed

It would not surprise me at all if the available tools for hockey are not as well developed as those for the other sports. Heck that list itself is pretty bad and there are numerous positions listed incorrectly. But we do need some sort of list

The comments on the story that contained the list are particularly critical. Lots of them are folks salivating over winning easily against folks that use the yahoo list or in the auto pick leagues with people that don't change the yahoo defaults

Yahoo's site is basically identical for all fantasy sports, so it'll work fine. The only real decision is (Actual) vs (Projected). Once you create the league (or whomever does) take a look at the rankings by those two, and see which one looks more logical. Actual is what we use about 80% of the time, I think.

I think that has been NYE and see no reason to change if he is willing to take the role once again

AS for the rest I will tinker a little bit once yahoo actually has their full set of rankings up and running

Any chance we can close the league and do the randomization thingy a few days before then to set draft order? I'll probably end up with 9th pick or something anyway so see no need to sprain my brain on the relative merits of Crosby, Ovechkin and the like.

Oh and did we set any BAPAY rules?

              How about something simple like

              1. 12 hours for the first 3 rounds
              2. 6 hours thereafter
              3. If a person has been BAPAYed the previous round and has not been in contact since, they are BAPAYed immediatedly upon their turn arising until they are sighted again
              4. BAPAY to be done as a intelligent BAPAY-- use the list strictly except for the obvious PIM anomolies. best player is picked to fill any available starters roles first. If all starters are picked its just BAPAY all the way.

              5. Any manager can BAPAY by posting the pick and starting the clock for the next player. The BAPAYed manager can always change the pick within * hours (thoughts on this?)

--- plus use some common sense/discretion and not Bapay immediatedly a person if the draft suddenly jumped through 6 managers unexpectedly and their turn arose at 1 a.m. their local or if they are away for a reasonable period and have specified when they will be back-- On the contrary side if the pick is with the person that drafts before me for several hours, I should give my pick and an alternate to someone else if I know I will be offline- I should be BAPAYed in that situation

I think those rules are relatively generous. if anyone wants to amend them please do so-- I was just thinking that we want to keep things moving and am not wedded to any of the times or rules that much . Our reality in the past was that most players were very quick and more than made up for the people that had to be slower. I just like to have rules so if there is any question during the drafts there is no reason for some of the strong personalities to clash.

Oh and I noticed the football bunch did a lot of sending their picks to other people to keep the draft moving-- I think we should encourage that
              Yes, Wednesday would be good.

I would think we'll close it sometime late Tuesday, I'll get a randomised order and post the order Tues evening, and keeners can start in, but no clocks til Wed AM EST. Part of the fun is keeping your hopes for Ovie and Price alive as long as possible, no?

I like the idea of a league wide stopped clock for BAPAYs of ~10PM to 8AM EST. I can go with the shorter clock after the third round if something like that is the case.

I think we should use the Yahoo list as a rough guide, not the law.

Managers should be able to switch a BAPAY pick prior to his next pick (he/she could post the ammended pick and the next pick at the same time). Sound good? The manager should have to post clearly that a BAPAY pick is being changed.

Nah--Are you sticking with the 4 bench spots?-- I believe opinion was tied and generally a lot of apathy otherwise

Otherrwise I think its same old-same old

I think we are thinking similarly but I would state it as
'follow the BAPAY list unless you have a damn good reason to do otherwise"-- The person BAPAYing someone else shouldn't feel they need to do an in-depth analysis-- as long as the BAPAY choice is reasonable they should use it.

The football folks did something like this and I quite liked it. The BayPayed manager still loses in the sense he loses the chance to take any of the intervening players. My only issue would be if I really wanted player X who gets BAPAYed in front of me. I draft someone else and then later see player x become available to managers behind me. I can live with it as a luck of the draw type thing and in all liklihood it would never be an issue but there is part of me that sees it as somehow unfair that a manager could miss out on a player in that fashion

Oh and if ben joins it should be a fun year with a very active draft thread

I appreciate the request, but if NYE doesn't want me in, then I will respect his wishes. Thanks for thinking of me though.

Too bad. Even though I frequently do not really enjoy your posting style, a little controversy (as long as it didn't go too far and thats the ticklish problem) would be preferable to the long silences I have seen in previous hockey threads.

Jaguar would work, if he posted more often in here like that.

Sadly I fear he is frequently too busy jerking off to Mandy Moore pictures on teh intarwabs.
