  • An interesting article:

Consider Kurt Warner a born-again MVP candidate.

He burst onto the scene unexpectedly once before: the former supermarket stock boy turned into a Super Bowl champ in 1999, writing one of the most improbable football fairy tales ever told. He earned league MVP honors that year, and again in 2001.

He's unexpectedly putting up world-class numbers here in 2008, too, after wandering the desert of NFL sidelines for much of the past six seasons, often playing the veteran caretaker role for newbies like Eli Manning in New York and Matt Leinart in Arizona.

But if you're looking for a candidate poised to capture MVP honors here at the halfway pole of 2008, the laser-sharp, record-setting 37-year-old passer is the clear choice.

    The individual performances

He's fresh off a classic Warner performance in Arizona's 34-13 win over St. Louis, a team that, in a tender bit of irony, probably prays for a QB of his caliber each Sunday. Warner completed 23 of 34 passes for 342 yards, two TDs, zero INTs and a 120.0 passer rating.

He's on pace to pass for 4,862 yards, and if he maintains that clip it would be second only to Dan Marino's 5,048-yard season in 1984. Interestingly, Warner currently holds the No. 2 spot, with his 4,830 yards in 2001. (We should note that Saints QB Drew Brees is on pace for 5,126 passing yards this year.)

    Warner is also:

    • Second in the NFL in TD passes (16)

    • Second in passer rating (104.2)

    • First in completion percentage (69.9), a mark that puts him in position to challenge the single-season record set by Ken Anderson in 1982 (70.6 percent).

A historic season for the Cardinals

More important than the individual numbers, though, is that Warner has achieved the near impossible: He's brought a touch of respectability to a Cardinals organization that's been the worst in North American sports by any objective measure.

How bad has it been for the Cardinals?

Consider this: the Cardinals are one of two teams that have been in the NFL since its inception in 1920 (the other is the Bears), and over the 88 seasons since then, the Cardinals have won just two playoff games.

That's not a misprint: Two playoff victories in 88 years of NFL football. They won the 1947 NFL championship game and added a wildcard win over the Cowboys in 1998. That's about one postseason victory nearly every half century. The Giants won four playoff games last year alone.

The organization has been a black hole for virtually everyone involved with it. Great coaches such as Joe Stydahar, Curly Lambeau, Don Coryell, Bud Wilkinson and Gene Stallings led the team at one point. All found great success elsewhere. All were failures with the Cardinals.

Yet today Arizona is 5-3, in clear control of the otherwise abysmal NFC West. If the playoffs started today, the Cardinals would host a wild-card game against Washington or Tampa.

That's no small feat for an organization that last hosted a playoff game when, as the Chicago Cardinals, they beat the Eagles in the 1947 title tilt.

The smartest decision of the year

Warner deserves a large part of the credit for Arizona's rare competitive season. So, too, does head coach Ken Whisenhunt. He made one of the smartest moves of the offseason when he rejected Leinart, the former No. 1 pick, in favor of the more seasoned Warner.

As the Cold, Hard Football Facts noted at the start of the season, Warner was the obvious choice. In fact, Warner vs. Leinart never should have been a debate. While Leinart has struggled in his brief career, Warner has been one of the most prolific players in the history of the game.

His career passer rating of 94.2 is second only to Steve Young's record 96.8. He surpassed the struggling Peyton Manning (94.1) at No. 2 on the all-time passer rating list last week.

Warner's career average of 8.12 yards per attempt is the NFL's best mark since Norm Van Brocklin retired in 1960 with an average of 8.16 yards per attempt.

His 342-yard game against St. Louis on Sunday also marks a place in history. It was his 45th 300-yard passing performance in just 101 career games. Nobody has cranked out 300 yards games at such a prolific clip. Marino holds the record, with 63 300-yard performances. But it took him 242 games to get there.

It all adds up to a very MVP-worthy season for Warner here in 2008. If he does win it, he'd join Brett Favre as the only players in league history to claim the title three times.

It sounds like Warner deserves more than just MVP honors. It sounds like he deserves a bronze bust in Canton, too.

Well, they have that Thanksgiving game.

Although, come to think of it, they will probably be the early game, and I will likely be on the road at the beginning and eating later, so I'll miss most of it.

            • Did anyone see this?
Linebacker Mike Peterson was back with the Jaguars after being sent home and not practicing for two straight days.

Peterson clears air with Del Rio, but playing status to be determined

              Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Linebacker Mike Peterson rejoined the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday, going through practice, attending meetings and trying to move on from what he called a rough couple of days.

It remained unclear whether the team's top tackler and defensive captain would return to the starting lineup Sunday at Detroit.

Coach Jack Del Rio said Peterson's status was "to be determined."

"He'll travel, and we'll decide what we think is best for the team," Del Rio said. "To me, we put an end to this."

Del Rio and Peterson spoke Friday morning, but neither the coach nor the player would address what was said in the closed-door meeting.

"I'm 100 percent behind my coach, 100 percent behind my teammates, ready to do what I need to do to get a win this week," Peterson said.

Del Rio sent Peterson home Wednesday as punishment for speaking out during a team meeting. According to teammates, Del Rio called out Peterson for his muscle-flexing celebration at Cincinnati following a sack. Del Rio was upset that Peterson was reveling in a play in a game the Jaguars trailed 21-3.

Peterson defended himself in the meeting, saying he was trying to give the team a spark, but Del Rio didn't want to hear any excuses. The coach had even told players before he singled out a few that he didn't want to hear a word from anyone.

Peterson returned to the complex Thursday, but was sent home again.

"It was rough, naturally it was rough," Peterson said. "But like I said, I'm 100 percent back with my teammates, players, ready to get back to work."

Peterson said the whole thing was blown out proportion, and he took exception to anyone believing it had something to do with his contract status or reduced playing time.

Peterson is in the final year of a six-year, $21 million contract. He ripped the club during training camp for not offering him an extension in the offseason, but Jacksonville didn't want to guarantee any money to a 32-year-old linebacker who missed 17 games the last two seasons because of injuries.

The Jaguars have pulled Peterson off the field in third-down passing situations, the first time in his 10-year career that he hasn't been an every-down player.

"What you may be thinking is totally wrong," Peterson said.

Peterson and Del Rio exchanged a few words on the practice field, then the coach patted the player on the backside and walked away. Peterson reclaimed his spot in the middle of the defense a few minutes later, but said he didn't know if he would be there Sunday.

"The decision is his," Peterson said. "All I can do is prepare myself and be ready. I'm ready to roll. Get back to football, that's my main focus. Doing whatever I can do to help my team get a win this week."

The Jaguars (3-5) have lost two straight and three of their last four. They are trying to avoid becoming the first in NFL history to lose back-to-back games to winless teams (Cincinnati and Detroit) this late in the season.

If Peterson doesn't play, Jacksonville would be without two defensive starters. Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle John Henderson was ruled out Friday because of a sprained medial collateral knee ligament.

Henderson, ejected from last week's game for trading blows with Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, missed practice all week and has been wearing a cumbersome knee brace.

"We'll rotate the other guys in," Del Rio said. "Obviously, Big John is a big, strong guy for us. We'd like to have him available, but he'll get healthy and rejoin us soon. We'll work it out. We'll plug in the guys we have and be ready to go battle."
              [/q]

Interesting... frankly from what I read I'd be behind Peterson on this one. When a team is down 21-6 they need encouragement and celebration of successes ... that's Management 101. But of course there's always a side that's not presented to every story ...

Sorry, if this was late in the game, and the guy's posing when you're getting your sorry asses kicked by the 0-fer Bungles, that's just stupid. A brief celebration - maybe. But don't make an ass of yourself. And in the meeting he should have just STFU. Don't make it worse by pissing off the coach again.

                  Agreed

Coach's are managers and while managers are supposed to have all the answers and at all times be 110% under control, sometimes, they need to bare their teeth.

I remember Madden and Summeral doing a game some years back and a celebration took place and Madden said that was just stupid, he did his job and he does some big celebration.

But, enough said, problem arose, it was addressed, now lets move on.

                      • That's what kills me. A team is getting beat 28-0. A person on losing team gets a sack, and starts pounding on his chest, and roars in pride. Big damned deal.
Guess what, punk? Your team is still losing 28-0.

One could easily make the argument that much of River's success this year has been due to their receivers (the same argument could also be made of Warner), but Brees seems to be the only one the Saints' offense that hasn't been injured.

Chambers, the number one receiver for the Chargers has been injured.

Rivers has the highest YPA as well, which shows that he's making the most of his throws.
