  • So we lost a few undefeated teams this week: Oklahoma, Missouri, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and LSU. This leaves us with 10 teams, just as predicted:
Given that there is always an upset or two, we'll probably see the undefeated teams dwindle to about ten in number next week.

Big 12 (3): Texas (vs. Missouri), Texas Tech (at Texas A&M), Oklahoma State (vs. Baylor)
Big Ten (1): Penn State (vs. Michigan)
Conference USA (1): Tulsa (vs. Texas-El Paso)
    Mid-American (1): Ball State (idle)
Mountain West (2): Brigham Young (at Texas Christian), Utah (vs. Colorado State)
    Southeastern (1): Alabama (vs. Mississippi)
Western (1): Boise State (vs. Hawai'i)

Not quite as many games to keep an eye on this week. Hard to image Texas stumbling against Missouri at home after how they beat Oklahoma, but anything is possible. Penn State appears to have a lay-up, but the last time they beat Michigan Bill Clinton was running against Bob Dole. UTEP is undefeated in-conference, so Tulsa may have some trouble. Of all the undefeated teams, it looks like BYU has the toughest game this week.

I think we'll be down to seven next week, losing Tulsa, BYU, and an unexpected upset (perhaps Texas Tech).

        Alabama is #1.

Cause Tulane and Western Kentucky are so hot?

Hey, Alabama beat Clemson and Arkansas, but I don't know good either are, as Clemson has lost to Maryland and Arkansas barely (and I mean barely) got by Western Illinois and Louisiana-Monroe.

Alabama did beat Kentucky, who I think is the best team on their schedule, but not by all that much. Georgia, I think, is by far the most overrated team in the country (barely getting by South Carolina and Tennessee, and looking unimpressive doing it.

Penn State's best win, btw, is against Illinois. As for Wisconsin, they barely lost to a Ohio State team with Wells, which is starting to look like a definite 10-15 team right now.

If you want to make an argument for a non-Penn State team, Texas has a far better one than Alabama.

          • That's nice... does that mean you consider Arkansas to be better than Penn State?

FWIW, the Sagarin rankings has Southern Cal with the 3rd toughest schedule in the country and thus has then ranked 2nd, ahead of Penn State and Arkansas and the rest. If we are just going to hang our hat on SOS, why not go all the way?

(btw, just for the record, Sagarin has Texas 1, USC 2, Penn State 3, and Alabama 4).

                • Another big game for Texas this weekend, against Missouri. Oklahoma then Missouri. I think that trumps anything USC or Penn St. has going. Of course, as I say, so goes life in the Big 12.

Texas Tech has Texas A&M. Tech should win, but it's not a cakewalk.

                  • And Tommy Bowden is gone at Clemson (about time too):

Clemson ousted football coach Tommy Bowden on Monday, four days after the Tigers lost to Wake Forest and fell to 3-3.

If Texas can get through Mizzou, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech... then they are a deserving #1. But that's a very tough run.

The game against Wake was truly dreadful, although I wonder why you would fire a 3-3 coach.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt.
