    That's 6 playoff teams and 2 that were close to making it. Plus, they beat the #2, #3 and #4 seeds in the AFC already. Now throw in the #1 seed from the NFC and you have them playing 4 of the top 5 teams in the NFL (aside from themselves).

    Easy schedule? Not a chance.
    It doesn't matter how tough they were last year. Heck, if beating Baltimore is difficult then Miami should be a contender.

    Bottom line, they are more likely then not to face the Jaguars in the first round, the only AFC contender they haven't played. If I were the Pats I'd not worry about the meaningless game against the Giants but make sure I was ready to beat the Jags in two weeks.

        As for Buffalo, it's not that difficult a schedule. They are at 0.510, which is about average, even with two games against an undefeated team.

          Why are you debating about DVOA? The topic was strength of schedule. That was my point. I don't care about DVOA, since it's not transparent. Strength of schedule is simple, and while it doesn't say anything about the quality of the team, it can show you the relative difficulty of the schedule.

              Ditto. If Pats, Colts, Cowboys or Packers play their starters long, they're nuts. Anyone that's in should be conservative. Yes, nice to go in on a winning roll. Not worth it.

                You guys don't seem to understand, I don't care about the winning records, I'm saying football in general was superior to what it is now. Put the Pats in 1972 and they would get stomped, flat out, by 75% of the teams, play by today's "Help the offense as much as we can" rules and they would do significantly better.

                Rodney Harrison is the only player on that team, hell, practically the entire league, that plays even close to the kind of football played in the 70's.

                    Completely disagree. The pool of potential players is much greater today than it was back then as football has become more and more popular and supplanted baseball as America's favorite sport.

                    Also increased weight training and "supplements" (not unheard of in the 70s either, the entire 1970s Steelers' team was on steroids after all) has led to 300 lb linemen who can run the 40 in 4.5.

                    The 72 Dolphins would get utterly destroyed today, and half the squad would be in the hospital.

                      Quality of play was fundamentally better back in the day -- fewer teams, a tradition of discipline.
                      Physical abilities, however, tilt strong toward today's athletes.

                        No way. That is just typical nostalgic old-guy claptrap. There's no profession in human history where people have gotten progressively worse at it. If all the advances over the years just make people worse at football, why wouldn't they just reject them?

                        I would go so far as to say that not only could the 2007 Patriots beat the 1972 Dolphins - so could the 2007 Jaguars or the 2007 Chargers or some other above-average team.
