I'm a Colts fan, so I'm hesitant to accuse people of running up the score. But this is just disgusting.
Oh come on, the Colts even run up the score in Manning's commercials.

"We'll stop trying to score when they stop trying to score."

Did the Redskins stop playing? Late timeouts, an onside kick, starters in until the end? NE pulled Maroney early, then Brady, Moss, etc., early in the 4th. How early are you supposed to pull them, at the half? They ran several times on 4th down, all the 'Skins had to do was stop them and they'd have the ball back without the extra 3 points from a field goal. Hey, at least the defense let up enough to allow the 'Skins a pride touchdown at the end.

Clearly the case. I applaud Miami for manning up and holding the NE juggernaut to just 7 points in the second half last week after giving up 42 in the first.

      • While I don't consider that game a clear example of running up the score, the Patriots ran the ball only 22 times in a game that was decided by the mid-2nd quarter.

First, it's not just a question of when you pull your quarterback, it's also a question of when you stop having him hurl deep passes. For the Patriots, Brady was still throwing deep to Moss with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Second, yea, you can pull your quarterback at the half. In 2004, he Colts pulled Manning with nearly two full quarters to play, after he had already thrown 6 touchdown passes in a little bit over a half.

It's hard to run the ball when all you've got for healthy backs are a third-down pass-catcher and a couple of fullbacks. Similar situation this week...NE doesn't have a backup RB at the moment, so once they take out Maroney to protect him there's not really an option but to throw.

As for the long pass to Moss...he was the guy that was open.

            • And according to Belichick he didn't want to be in three-wide sets at the end of the game, but he didn't have a choice. Speculation is Kyle Brady got injured, so there was only 1 TE available.

              • Actually, he was double covered and made a spectacular grab.

Here's what a sportsmanlike drive in the 4th quarter of a blowout should look like. Indianapolis leading 31 points (one score fewer than the Pats were leading.)

1st-10, IND20 9:40 J. Sorgi passed to R. Wayne to the left for 9 yard gain
2nd-1, IND29 8:55 J. Addai rushed to the left for 3 yard gain
1st-10, IND32 8:12 J. Addai rushed to the left for 3 yard gain
2nd-7, IND35 7:26 J. Addai rushed to the left for 5 yard gain
3rd-2, IND40 6:42 K. Keith rushed to the left for 5 yard gain. CAR committed 5 yard penalty
1st-10, 50 6:13 K. Keith rushed to the left for 5 yard gain
2nd-5, CAR45 6:04 K. Keith rushed to the right for 10 yard gain
1st-10, CAR35 5:21 K. Keith rushed to the right for 9 yard gain
2nd-1, CAR26 4:33 K. Keith rushed to the right for 3 yard gain
1st-10, CAR23 3:48 C. Dawson rushed to the left for 6 yard loss
2nd-16, CAR29 3:42 C. Dawson rushed to the right for 3 yard loss
3rd-19, CAR32 3:33 C. Dawson rushed to the right for 7 yard gain
4th-12, CAR25 2:42 J. Sorgi incomplete pass down the middle

See how they have the backup quarterback in, and they're calling as many run plays as possible?

He wasn't doubled. There was one guy on him, who he beat, and the ball was thrown before the help even started in Moss' direction.

Yeah, see how they have all their running backs available? And Brady was out at around 9 minutes left as well...

                    • I think this is a "where there's smoke, there's fire" situation. This is not the first week Belichek has been accused of running up the score... he's been accused of it for years.

There's no reason they couldn't have had Cassel in the game for most of the second half, and certainly no reason Faulk or others couldn't be running the ball. Heck, i'll suit up and run the ball up middle for 2-3 yards behind that line if they want me to...

And a deep pass - a deep ROUTE - is inexcusable up 30+. Heck, if nothing else it has higher injury potential, and much higher INC potential. Quick short unders every play are appropriate.

                      • Pulling the starting QB doesn't mean jack****. You're telling me two things, and I'm not buying either.
                        A) Just because the 2nd string QB is in, they pull back on the reins?
                        B) That 2nd string QB isn't going to grab his chance to shine? Or any other position?

"A" has to occur, because "B" sure won't. In the case of New England, "A" never occurs.

Put the 2nd QB in to avoid injuring your 1st QB

I'm going to laugh heartily when a few major NE players go down for the season with freak injuries in the 3q-4q of blowouts...

                          • That will be funny. I'm not a Pats fan. I don't like they way they conduct business. From what I read, most of the teams in the NFL feel the same way. Being a good team is all a team that's good has to say. I may not show it here, but I'm a big believer in showing class and style.

God forbid you actually allow the backup QB to run the offense for five minutes. You know, when he has barely even run a handful of series since high school, much less started a meaningful game. I mean, I'm sure they'll need somebody to take over when all this karma comes back to bite them in the ass.

Favre? Any others, assuming he might?
