  • Isn't just Sabathia that the Yanks should be worried about. Carmona has been great as well (he's actually been better under ERA+ than Sabathia... #1 in the league, actually!).

The bullpen isn't that wonderful though (well, that isn't entirely true, but Borowski is a bad closer), so there could be some late inning wins for the Yanks, which would be used by some (not you, I'm sure ) as proof of the Yankee "mystique" .

    • Weekly League champion! Yay!

I like to think it was because I gave it 110%, stayed consistent, and played with true grit.

But it's more likely because I had Holliday, Hanley Ramirez, David Ortiz, Magglio Ordonez and Jake Peavy

Oh, I'm not ignoring Carmona at all. He's been fantastic (the name ROCKS, too). It's just that, unlike Sabathia, the Yankees HAVE faced Carmona twice this season (and, IIRC, scored something like 6 runs in 13 innings, which isn't much). And, while he is an excellent pitcher, the I think the Yanks have a slightly better shot against him. Reasonable people can disagree, of course. One could cite Sabathia's career stats vs. the Yankees, though I think that's almost irrelevent (they haven't faced him since 2004).

About Borowski... it's funny. My best friend from college, also a Yankees fan, said to me the other day "we want to see Borowski." Implying, of course, that the Yanks could hit him. Ok, sure, they probably can. But if they see him, it's a save situation for the Indians, which is obviously bad And the Indian 'pen outside of him is excellent.

        • Borowski is like Ryan Dempster. He has the right mentality to close, but doesn't have the pure filthy stuff you see in the real studs.

Just as the stats count with 161 the same if you miss a game that can't be made up (and doesn't need to be), which happens occasionally.

I think Holliday will have a better chance than it seems anyone here does, because he came through in the clutch when it mattered to bring his team to the playoffs (if they make it today). If they don't, then it's probably Prince... but I'd rather see Holliday have it to be honest, he was more important to his team overall than Prince was (see Braun... Tulowitzki is good, but Braun is clearly more effective protection to Fielder).

            • I have to agree. While the Rockies have Hawpe and Helton and Tulowitzki. None of them are as impressive as Braun and Corey Hart is similar to Helton.

Though Holliday may get unfairly dinged for playing at Coors (his OPS+ is not far from Fielder's, and OPS+ is adjusted for park effects).

              • I agree that Holiday would be a great choice; I just don't believe it's gonna happen. The Rockies get virtually no national media attention, and the voters have been trained for years to discount hitting heroics that happen at Coors Field. It's a shame, but it's a fact.

So the Yanks are off to play the Indians. I'm not terribly confident. There are 4 or 5 pitchers on the Yankee staff I trust at all. Sabathia is a badass, and the Yanks are vulnerable to good LHP. The way their last starts went, I would prefer Hughes over Mussina in the postseason rotation. Then again, Hughes may (should) be assigned to shadow Roger in Game 3 in case Roger is still broken (or just plain sucks). Pettitte's last start stunk. Matsui is having his knee drained and apparently is limited to DHing, which basically puts Giambi on the bench (given the way he has been hitting, perhaps for the best).

The Yanks are going to need to get a little lucky. But hey, it's happened before. Go Yankees!

and somehow the Pads are winning anyway!
