Wow, Imran. What's up with the Mets?

    I'm trying, man!

Nice win for the Yanks on "house money" day. The lineup they put out there was a joke, but Hughes pitched great and they won anyway. The Sox lost, so they have not yet clinched the division.

Yep... And while Cub fans are biting their nails as we watch the Cubs hopefully back their way into the playoffs... (lossing 3 straight to the lowly Marlins)... Mets fans must be simply going mad. Tied in the standings this morning with the Phils... talk about blowing a big lead.

There aren't any Mets fans in the office (there used to be this one guy, but he left and since then it's just Yanks/Sox), so I don't know for sure, but I'd bet there is a fair amount of angst, yeah.

Imran, how you holding up? My advice to you, sir, is to start drinking heavily.

The hitting also seems to have disappeared a bit too, and Perez failed them mightily tonight after a mostly strong season. It's not over yet, but now the Mets' fate is out of their hands. They've pretty much gotta win these last two to have a shot, which would've been amazing to believe even a week ago.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are in, the Diamondbacks are in, and for all of the Rockies's wins, the Padres's magic number for the wild card is one. It could all be over tomorrow if the Mets lose again and the Phillies and Padres win.

Meanwhile, here's to hoping the Yankees draw the Indians first...

                      • And one day later, the Mets are back in control of their fate with precisely the effort they needed and with the Phillies finally slipping up. Win and they stay alive, whether it's for a tiebreaker trip to Philadelphia or (most likely) a flight back home to prepare for San Diego should the Phillies lose.

There's still the potential for a four-way logjam for these last two spots, though. Stay tuned, everybody...

                            • Well, Colorado won, which means there's still a shot for that 4-way I spoke of earlier. We'd need wins by the Mets, Phillies, and Rockies with a loss by the Padres in order to get it.

Should that happen, the first step would be to determine the NL East champion, with the Mets going to Philly (since Philly won the season series). The loser of that game would enter a two-game playoff for the wild card.

The Rockies, having won season series against all other participants, would have the choice of whether to win two home games or one road game. The obvious choice would be one road game, and in that case, the Padres would face the loser of Mets/Phillies in the first game (the Mets would go to San Diego, while the Padres would travel to Philly). The winner would then host the Rockies the next day for the wild card.
