Keenan to Calgary? It's a possibility

It looks like "Iron Mike" could be back in business behind the bench of an NHL team.

Sources tell TSN that Mike Keenan is on the verge of becoming the new head coach of the Calgary Flames.

While the Flames declined to comment when contacted by TSN today, sources confirm Keenan is currently in Calgary and if all goes as expected, the well-traveled NHL executive and coach could be announced as the head coach of the Flames as early as Thursday.

If so, that would appear to leave current Flames' head coach Jim Playfair as odd man out, but if Keenan is able to finalize his deal with the Flames, it's possible Playfair may be kept in the organization, but his fate remains unclear at this point.

The Flames went 43-25-10, finishing 8th in the Western Conference last season under Playfair. They lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs.

Keenan's last job in the NHL was with the Florida Panthers where he was replaced by Jacques Martin just prior to the 2006-07 season. The Panthers were Keenan's seventh NHL team. He began his NHL career as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. He captured the Jack Adams trophy awarded to the league's top coach in 1985 while leading the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final. He also took the Chicago Blackhawks to the Finals in 1988.

In 1993-94, he was hired as head coach of New York Rangers and led the franchise to its first Stanley Cup win since 1940. Keenan also served as head coach and GM as the St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, and Boston Bruins.

Keenan began his coaching career with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League.

Iron Mike has been behind the bench for 1,014 games with 569 wins, 447 losses, 140 ties and 20 overtime losses.

Suffice to say the next 24 hours in Calgary are going to be most interesting.

Pleased to see an experienced coach. Not sure if Iron Mike is the one I want to see. Especially given what he's done to Huselius in Florida...probably the same in Calgary, plus Tanguay..

        Official:

Flames to name Keenan as head coach

        Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie

        6/14/2007 12:14:23 PM

Following the formalities of signing a multi-year contract, Mike Keenan and the Calgary Flames will officially announce his hiring as head coach at the Pengrowth Saddledome at a news conference at 3:30 pm et today.

Jim Playflair will remain on as an assistant to Keenan, while further discussions with Rich Preston, Wayne Fleming and Rob Cookson are expected to take place on Friday.

Keenan's hiring comes as a huge surprise to many, but a quick trip down memory lane shows a long history with the Sutter family.

Keenan and Flames general manager Darryl Sutter worked together in Chicago and helped lead the Blackhawks to the 1992 Stanley Cup Final.

Keenan hired Brian Sutter as his assistant coach in 1991 as part of his Canada Cup staff.

        <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://ad.ca.doubleclick.net/click%3Bh=v8/3571/3/0/%2a/a%3B62772937%3B0-0%3B0%3B7171796%3B4307-300/250%3B21420532/21438422/1%3B%3B%7Esscs%3D%3fhttp://www.tsn.ca/xbox"><IMG SRC="http://m1.2mdn.net/1109307/xbox_forza2_300x250_2.jpg" BORDER=0></A>

Duane and Brent Sutter both played for Mike Keenan in Chicago, while twins, Ron and Rich Sutter also have playing experience with Keenan as their head coach.

As one NHL executive puts it, "Keenan and the Sutters are like thinkers..it makes perfect sense."

The Flames went 43-25-10, finishing 8th in the Western Conference last season under Playfair. They lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs.

This is the guy that pulled a goalie for a man advantage towards the end of a second period. He's destructive of more players than those few he helps out. I bet Huselius has already asked his agent to start a trade request.

An interesting view of Iron Mike...

TOP TEN GRIPES OF PLAYING UNDER MIKE KEENAN:

            10. Don't mind referring to him as "Your excellency", but having to kiss his ring...
            9. Locks you alone in rooms for hours on end in order to "psych" you up for games...
            8. Decides to trade you, then doesn't, only to go through with it next day, then back off...
            7. "He makes more money than our Franchise Player!".
            6. Practice sessions and skate-arounds with live explosions and ammunition fired...
            5. You want to shove some of that ice he chews down his freaking throat...
            4. He trades away 3 of your friends and all your pads for an Orangutan and 4 bananas...
            3. Drafts a forward from Mongolia in the 1st Round...
            2. Being sent down to the IHL or AHL is starting to look really appealing...
            1. He decides nobody deserves the Captaincy, so he gives himself the "C"...
            Keep on Civin'
RIP rah, Tony Bogey & Baron O

Quite the opposite. When asked today how he feels about playing under Mike Keenan, he said he doesn't mind.

It's a good thing he's not the GM. Sutter is one of perhaps only two GMs that can stand up to Keenan and keep him on a leash...

...and the other is raising a Stanley Cup banner in the spring.

                  Mirtle: Huselius optimistic about Keenan

A lot of players have what you might call 'history' with Mike Keenan. Calgary Flames winger Kristian Huselius is one of those.

Huselius played under Iron Mike when he was the coach of the Florida Panthers from 2001 to 2004, and was eventually dealt by GM Keenan to the Flames in December, 2005, for Steve Montador.

In four seasons with the Panthers, Huselius managed 127 points in 257 games, and spent the majority of his time firmly planted in Keenan's doghouse. After the move to Calgary, he's posted 49 goals and 116 points in 135 games, including a career-best 77-point season last year.

Given the history, one would think the winger was dreading Keenan's return.

                  Not so, he says.

"I'm surprised. But I think that we are both in a different situation now," Huselius told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet today. "I had a good season last year. And Keenan is coming to a different organization and a better club.

"For me its no problem at all. If he just let the players compete on the same conditions, I think this is gonna work out fine."
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Surprisingly decent BS for a young player.

And, "... If he just let the players compete on the same conditions, I think this is gonna work out fine." Not going to happen.

It does sort of make sense. If Sutter is convinced the team has just one more chance at the brass ring this side of a lot of contracts, he thinks Keenan is worth the risk because he has delivered results.

And it's not like the Flames are unused to a hard coach. The downside is they totally tank because the players are just sick and tired of being ridden.

                          Awesome.

The Canucks make a final, fail to make it a few years later, have a disappointing playoff result, and fire the coach that got them to the finals and replace him with Iron Mike Keenan.

This it the best news I've heard all season. 8 free wins for the Canucks.

Ben, the coach that got them to the finals is the GM who just hired Keenan.

And Quinn was the GM who hired Keenan to coach the Canucks, who was the coach who had taken the Canucks to the stanley cup.

                              The situations are totally parallel.
