    • how in the hell can they afford to pay Beckham that kind of money?

seriously. I don't think any baseball or football player makes that much.

      • As I understand it, that includes rights to his image and likeness. As far as salary goes, I heard it was something like $6 million per annum -- not that high in comparison to lots of athletes in the US.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • Didn't A Rod get a $250M contract? Of course that's baseball. Don't know how US soccer can afford that.

More people outside the US will be interested in watching US soccer now. Adu hasnt done anything outside the US except been hyped as the next Pelé.

For the modest size of the American professional soccer game, the league's owners have very deep pockets.

Phil Anschutz owns the operating rights to the LA Galaxy. Forbes has his assets as $6.4 billion, the #89th richest person in the world.

That said, US sports teams aren't charities, so he must expect to earn a healthy return on the signing.

              • It's easily affordable since the Galaxy is only footing $10 mil of it. The rest are endorsement deals which aren't from the team, per se.

He'll make far more money overseas on Beckham's new move than in the US.

And, I think it's a good move for the MLS. Since only one star doesn't count against the salary cap, it won't bankrupt the league like the NASL, and it'll bring in some big name foriegn talent, which will increase the interest in the league from soccer fans in the US who choose to watch Europe's leagues more than the local one. And from the media... and right on the heels with the new deal with ESPN (coincidence... I think not!)

                • Btw, Asia, of course, loves the guy (remember how his shirts sold like hotcakes there when he went to Madrid... they'll sell the shirts with the Galaxy as well). Someone on another forum who lives in Japan was saying how this was top news there. He was speculating that LA Galaxy highlights will probably show up on Japanese television (kind of like they do with Ichiro in MLB).

                  • That's $10 million per annum that the Galaxy are footing. That seems a little high, considering the modest size of the stadium and TV rights contract.

MLS has been conservative in the past, because of the NASL debacle. But this is decidedly not conservative.

                    • Is there a team salary cap in MLS?

                      Comment

                      • Yeh, it will be something like $2.5 million next year. There are caveats that allow teams to spend more in certain situations. For instance, there is one designated player for each team -- Beckham will be the Galaxy's. The league is single entity, so for each team's designated player, the league will pay the first $400,000 (and $400k will go against the cap), while the club will pick up the rest. In the case of Beckham, that means the Galaxy will pay $9.6 million per annum as salary.

The designated player rule is new this year. The season starts in March and the transaction window is now open. That's why you may have folks like Ronaldo (with the Red Bulls) announce deals soon.

I don't think DC United is contemplating using its designated player slot this year. We're going after Argie and Brazilian first division castoffs for value. More in the $200,000 to $400,000 per annum range.

But, as I stated, the new deal with ESPN starts next season. And if they blow that, it could be back to square one. The league has inched its way along for the last 11 years and they are now striking for a bigger piece of the pie. A lot of new things coming about this season, including a US-Mexico club competition with matches during the middle of the week, Toronto F.C., and now the designated player rule (aka, "The Beckham Rule" - designated long before Beckham even was talking about signing).

Rather than simply stay on a level below, they decided to strike now, while not totally go overboard.

                          • Though I have to say, the biggest WTF is that the "designated player slot" can be TRADED... though one team can only have a max of two.

                            • If I were the DC United front office, I would trade the slot, if I could get good value out of the deal.

                              • Unless it was a REALLY good deal I wouldn't do it. Who knows when a pretty decent Euro star wants to play for your team? If you are out of a slot, what do you do then?
