I remember everything like it was yesterday. I had just gotten to school after the 1st plane hit and we were sitting waiting for class to start when we watched the 2nd plane hit. I wrote an article for my company yesterday about 9-11 and how it is not important to remember as an American, but for the world to remember. What happened on that day affected the entire world one way or another. And it is disgusting that people make a joke about it. Oerdin, DaShi, etc. way to disrespect the dead, make a mockery of the attacks, you can't even put politics away to remember the dead...I pity those of you who mock 9-11. You just have no idea.

Another personal attack in this thread and it gets closed.

How pathetic would that be, people? We can't even have a thread to remember a tragedy without it descending into petty bickering? Shape up.

It's not the thread that's being offensive.

Forgetting or remembering aside, may we get over it? I mean, we've gotten over Fort Sumter, the Maine, the Lusitania, 9/1/39, Pearl Harbor, Mississippi Sate, Kennedy's assassination, Robert Kennedy's assassination, and Martin Luther King's assassination, so do you think we can get over 9/11? I'm not asking us to abandon Afghanistan to the Taleban. I'm just saying that it's time to move on.

I actually did forget about it--which bothered me a little. But when I thought about it, it makes sense: it's been almost a decade; I personally did not lose anyone close to me then; I did not feel threatened by terrorism even after the attack on my home soil; I did not buy into the whole popularly manufactured scab-picking presented by the media.

And so for me, the wounds may not have been as deep, and what ones they are, I suppose have healed. Not that I'm expecting everyone else to be at this point; had the attack happened in Chicago, or Atlanta, I'm sure I'd be saying something very different right now.

Neither of the Kennedys nor MLK were just blown off. Their killers were punished. As were those involved in the other mentioned incidents. Still, although a terrible event in history, I don't think anyone compares one murder to 2,993 of 9/11. Pearl Harbor's loss was 2,386 and it was avenged.

I watched a documentary on History Channel last night about 9/11. It was entirely of footage done by nine different people in New York City who had on-hand a video camera on that day.

Yeah, just like we went after Osama bin Laden instead of getting sidetracked into bull**** about Iraq and weapons of mass destruction . . . oh wait!

He didn't say 'blown off', he said getting over it and moving on. I mean in order to live our lives we have to move on from tragedy. We do it when a close family member dies. Our society shouldn't always be living in a 9/11 mindset, because if that happens then (and I hate to use this phrase, but it fits) the terrorists win.

To be fair, I don't think Slowwy wants us to live in constant daily gloom-mindset with regard to remembering 9/11. He just thought that some people have shown too much disrespect in this thread about 9/11. I don't think he has a problem with moving on, but when it comes to remembrance, he would like to see more respect/serious reflection rather than tasteless jokes or inappropriate political commenting.

But I did notice that Slow never responded to Q^3 statement about why humor in the face of such situations is actually cathartic and helpful.

Humour is a coping mechanism. People joked about Kursk days after it sank, people joked about11/09 days after it happened (remember the picture of WTC with needle-like holes for the planes to fly through?), people joke about paedophilia (look in the funny pictures' thread), people joke about cancer.
