9/11, the event that may mark the end of America. Bin Laden got everything he wanted from it. The damage to this country wasn't the destruction of buildings or loss of life, it was the final nail in the coffin of bipartisan politics. It was the loss of American ideals of freedom and democracy. The country has been in a self-destructive spiral ever since.

I was at a rubbish job looking forward to some birthday pints in the evening. I learned of the disaster from AoA at Civfanatics, who was only working a few blocks away at the time, yet incredibly found the time to post his feelings, and exactly what was going on from what he could tell. It was not a pleasant soirée at the pub - we were all depressed and worried that the US would declare war on anyone who looked at them cockeyed (Rex Banner, The Simpsons). But our evening was nothing to those in New York. We won't forget their suffering.

I actually found out first early in the morning at work on Poly. At first I thought it was a prank until I tried to hit one of the news sites and the traffic was so bad I couldn't get through. That was a weird feeling because that was when I knew it was true. And then the second.

I was at work. Learned about it early and tracked via Web, radio and (after we had all given up on work) network Tv. Saw the second tower hit on live TV -- totally surreal. It's like the Kennedy assassination in that I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when it happened.

Yesterday, a "Swedish" Taleban was arrested in Pakistan. He was hidden away in Guantanamo for a couple of years, but then released due to lack of evidence. Well, if he wasn't a terrorist back then, he surely is now... But we don't know.
