No Orthodox connection whatever--I specifically picked it with that in mind. It's tradition to read the gospel in as many languages as possible, and I wanted to do it in a language I was sure nobody else would already be doing (I can do Spanish, but we already have somebody doing that one). I picked Welsh because I was briefly interested in the language as a teenager after reading Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising sequence, and decided I was going to learn Welsh. Then promptly didn't, because I was lazy. I needed something to do for Advent and Lent while I was off most internet use, so I buckled down on Duolingo. Turns out trying to use Duolingo to learn Welsh past a certain point is just infuriating due to their utter refusal to teach by any method other than immersion, but I learned enough to not totally embarrass myself on pronunciation. In the end I just listened to somebody reading the passage aloud, over and over again. From memory, I think it starts something like "gyda'r nos, ar a dydd cynraf hynnw o'r wythnos."Originally posted by I AM MOBIUS View Post
Hey that's really cool! 👍 How come you were learning Welsh to read a gospel passage for Orthodox Easter?
I didn't think the Welsh were very Orthodox, though interestingly there's a big Wales - Ukraine connection, due to the fact that Wales became the first industrial nation in the world.
Basically the Welsh set up Ukraine's own industrial revolution and even founded Donetsk, which used to be called Hughesovka, after John Hughes who founded it.
There was a really big Welsh ex-pat community, with its own hospital, schools, church etc. so maybe there was crossover with the Orthodox religion etc?
Cardiff is also twinned with Luhansk.
I wasn't aware of a Welsh enclave in Ukraine, but the weird little group of settlers in South America is fun. They were in a Madeleine L'Engle book.

English colonialism is not the equivalent of Nazi Germany. Very few things are equivalent to Nazi Germany. If it were equivalent to Nazi Germany, saying the Welsh deserved it merely for having a language you don't consider aesthetically pleasing would be more, not less, ****ed up.
Also "colonialism" feels anachronistic in the context of the conquest of Wales which happened during the late Middle Ages IIUC. However it feels a bit naive expecting historical accuracy from you. Also, did you know that the cirrhosis of the liver caused by massive drinking can cause blood to back up into the veins around your esophagus (tube going to your stomach)? And that you can have massive bloody vomiting as a result? That feels relevant to this conversation for some reason.

english colonialism is probably worse than nazi germany. the one that needs history lessons is you. which is a bit strange seeing as I think you are married to someone not of your pristine english/american white race.
nazis pampered the jews in comparison to what the english did to the "lesser" races.
as for drinking I only failed once in 6 months, My liver is perfect
edit: I misread the last phrase. I actually thought you were trying to protect me but instead it was a vomiting commentLast edited by Bereta_Eder; May 3, 2026, 12:27.

also the amount of stupidity of some people. americans are really plain minded.
it was a poignant joke. I don't care about the welsh lanmguage but it looks funny.
taking everything i say at face value is not a sign of complex thought. retorting in a serious manner is even more ridiculous

It is unreasonable to expect me to distinguish the insane and stupid things you routinely say with the (apparent) intention that people take them seriously from the insane and stupid things you say as jokes. Especially when you double down and say "how is that a troll?" If nothing you say is ever intended to be taken seriously, then your sense of humor is pretty bad.Originally posted by Bereta_Eder View Postalso the amount of stupidity of some people. americans are really plain minded.
