Because the people of these regions want to live in their NATIVE country - Russia, not in the country where they have been declared a "sub-humans" in 2014.
These lands belong to Russia for centuries and 95% of the population there WERE Russians from the beginning and ARE Russians now.
They don't want to be sub-humans and being slaughtered by the Nazi Ukrainians, silly.
Simple as that!

The people on these lands had never asked for independence from their NATIVE LAND (Russia). They were forcibly and illegally given by Soviets to Ukraine first in 1920's (Novorossiya) and in 1954 (Crimea), then again in 1991.

Just try to understand a simple axiom:

"If USSR could be divided, so is Ukraine!".

If we give-up a single inch of Novorossiya, they will come there and slaughter native Russian population over there like they have already done at Donbass and Kursk region (and their officials don't even hide their plans).

Of course the USSR wasn't split by an invading military was it? Your axiom would be a bit like saying if the British empire could be split in 1776 then Serbia could be split in 2008. There's really no connection and the splits have to be evaluated by their separate mechanisms and histories. I'd maintain that most splits are wrong and that all remain illegal until the associated sovereign state governments sign off in some way. In the USSR this took the form of all of the constituent regional governments eventually recognizing the dissolution as well as Declaration No. 142-N. Do you dispute that? How would any of that apply to Ukraine?

Travelers who return from Ukrainian controlled areas of the 4 oblasts all seem to have a completely flipped account of popular sentiment to yours. Our regional sales associate was born in Zaporizhzhia and has always clarified that her first language was Russian not Ukrainian but when she speaks about the conflict she definitely seems to direct all of her resentment at Putin and none at all to Zelenskyy. I guess it comes down to who you want to believe and maybe to how you think your present company will react.
