Did the "West" give China its modern ideology?

OMG yes. China continues to lean heavily on Western connections for technological advancement. The Soviet technological collaboration is mostly rust bucket money losing state owned heavy industry that has nothing to with the post Deng meteoric rise of their economy.

But the main reason they will avoid choosing Russia over the West is that it would cost them, a lot. As much as possible they will use a West-Russia conflict to enrich themselves at the expense of anyone at all.

China's interests will routinely diverge from Russia's and frankly everyone elses too.

It might never have pulled that off if there hadn't been a special operation in Ukraine.

I'm ambivalent about Russia and China being friends. I certainly don't think any other state deserves any say about whether or not they are.

Harsh reality Serb? The PRC blocking and cancelling Russia's firesale discount gas pipeline proposal is harsh reality...for Russia. The PRC needs a lot more natural gas. Russia has a lot it must sell. For allies this should be a match made in Heaven. The PRC, ominously...for Russia, wants Russia to desperately need them but they do not want to need Russia at all.

The PRC has rescued the Russian economy, but don't expect any alliance. Russia is on its own for now.
