I think he's right that China will never in the foreseeable future contemplate a hot war with Russia. They know that would certainly cost more than it could gain regardless of how it ended. I think you're right, however that China will do zero for Russia that doesn't directly serve its own interests and they definitely have conflicts with Russia on which they will force Russian concessions through non-military means that they now have more leverage for than they ever previously dreamed they could hope for.

That's not what they believe. They just don't believe that Russian and Chinese interests will ever align as well as Western interests have. I think everybody understands both Russia and China want to cooperate to undermine the Western bloc. The greviences the PRC has against Russia are real and documented. The PRC will likely never seek to undermine Russia as an enemy, but it will surely exploit opportunities to extract zero sum transactions that benefit the PRC at Russia's expense. The special operation has granted them enormous leverage for that.
