I think Emil Mannerheim made a better showing with an impossible situation than Yamamoto did.

                        • I wasn't sure if the best measure of greatness would be how much opportunity for greatness your state afforded you as a general in this contest. Was Ike a greater general than any of these generals who didn't serve in one of the big 3 then? In any event Mannerheim's campaigns had a profound effect on the course of the war.

I'm totally undecided about who should be eliminated next but I suppose it will be Patton or Mannerheim for me. Which was the greater general?

                          • Manstein gets benefit due to being relieved after disagreeing with Hitler in early 1944. That reduced opportunities for him to make mistakes at the end of the war.

Patton made some mistakes, but also had genius (same with Rommel, though, who is already out).

I just read a bit, and Mannerheim seemed more an Ike. I just don't think he is at the same level of Zhukov or Nimitz (I know that some people don't give all the credit to Nimitz that I do), or Manstein.

I guess I would favor Patton over Mannerheim, but I have read a lot more about Patton than Mannerheim.

I think Manstein also gets some credit for his after war activities...as does Mannerheim.

Patton was a brilliant tactical commander but showed a lack of ability to understand broader strategic relationships.

Nimitz likely saved tens of thousands of lives with his strategy on approaching the war in the Pacific. He practically invented replenishment at sea which gave the Navy to keep up its incredible pace in the late war.

Zhukov basically saved the Red Army and turned it into a juggernaut. His relationship with Ike may very well have avoided another war shortly after the end of WWII.

All these leaders have strengths and are deserving. Yet, I agree that of those on the list Zhukov and Nimitz are at the top.
