I also have a question - if Trump thinks that Putin is a great guy and not a threat, but also thinks Europe needs to pay it's NATO 'dues', who exactly does he think NATO countries are actually under threat from? Does he think it's China?

Trump very much does believe Putin is a threat and he has said so for eight years. He has also said he wants to stop the dying from the hot war and replace it with more of a cold war style containment.
