big question: what do you think the peak number for covid deaths per day is going to be? It's currently at about 2700, and the 7 day average lags behind hospitalizations. My guess is that we'll see that number double at worst, but likely at best hit about 4k.

I think it is hard to guess-
After all the numbers oft active cases in the USA are still on the rise, with no sign of peaking anytime soon.

I also think that there may be jumps in the numbers of deaths per day, thanks to local ICU capacities (in cities or even states) getting overwhelmed by critical CoViD-19 cases (and therefore people die who, with proper treatment, could have survived)

Johnson and Johnson - 100 million

This is enough to vaccinate everyone in the US ~1.33 times. (Johnson and Johnson may only require 1 dose)

The interesting question may be, if the vaccine doses make it to the points of distribuition in all states intact.

AFAIK thre are special requirements like an intact cooling chain (AFAIK the BioNTech, for example, has to stay at -70 or -100°C or the like),
so the distribution may need especially thorough planning ot warehousing and the logistic chains.

I doubt that the federal government is able to do this (too many experts having beern fired and replaced by Yes-Men) ...
and I also wouldn't think that the expertise for such endeavour may lack in several US states.

pchang do you have any data on the rollout schedule? Are front line workers getting it yet? I am assuming the well connected will take a big part of the first cut that just got delivered but was hoping ER nurses would get first dibs on it

As far as I know, ER doctors will get first dibs, then nurses. Distribution is very local. Here in LA, it will be Cedar Sinai first. They are 1 of only 7 hospitals in CA to get the first doses.

I thought some of these vaccines had transit stability issues, not just temperature. Shoving in a freezer in a truck is an oversimplification.

Although I heard that from a pharmacist friend with access to the U.K. government logistical analysis studies - so could be wrong and or not public and I can’t easily verify.

What do you think these vaccines are made of, nitroglycerin? They will be stored in boxes with foam cushioning and then put in freezers (and some with dry ice).

I assume something got lost in translation. He was talking about having to have a central location and not able to distribute so people had to come into a centre rather than have it delivered to them, then something about freeze-drying and rehydrating on site.

Any hospital of decent size can do the Pfizer vaccine. The main problem will be not enough doses for everyone until the AstraZenica vaccine gets widely distributed. Big cities and big population centers will get treated first. Some small rural areas may get short shrift until late Spring.
